I saw the MSNBC special on the UFC, and they showed a 1995 interview with McCain in which he advocated banning martial arts fighting. I did a google search and found a post from a poster called Dr Meat on a Sherdog forum. I thought it was interesting, so here it is:
McCain is running for President now and, personally - I don't give a fuck about his politics. I'll never forget his campaign against MMA and the real reasons behind it.
McCain successfully campaigned to get MMA taken off of cable outlets. He said it was barbaric and terrible - human cockfighting. Of course, McCain was a long-time supporter of boxing. Then we come to find out that Cindy McCain's (the wife) family is the owner of the largest Budweiser distributor in the USA. Budweiser was the number one sponsor of PPV boxing and, of course, MMA was a genuine threat (now more than ever) to the revenue generated by pro-boxing PPV events.
So I take this to mean that McCain is the kind of guy that wouldd say he morally objected to something that was keeping him from making money. Douche.
If he'd had his way, UFC would have folded. Who knows what would have happened... if Pride would still happen...if people would keep trying year after year or quit...
If he'd had his way we'd still be wondering what an olympic level wrestler or Judoka could do against a top kickboxer. We'd have to speculate about the eventuality of a guy like Fedor, becuse - even though he existed, would we have known about him if he was just ruling the Sambo world?
I fucking LOVE MMA, just like you guys. I truly love how far the sport has come since we didn't know what to call it (NHB? shootfighting?...). I don't see any way this sport would be what it is if McCain had his way.
I'm certainly not saying he'll come after MMA again if elected, and I'm not telling anyone how to think or vote. I'm just telling you why I think the man is a douche. Its personal, he came after my sport and held it back. Fuck him.
