- James T. Hodgkinson from Belleville, Illinois, opened on the GOP team at 7:00 a.m. at Eugene Simpson Stadium Park in Alexandria, Virginia
- House Majority Whip Steve Scalise was shot in the hip and left a trail of blood as he tried to crawl to safety
- Two heroic US Capitol Police officers were injured trading pistol gunfire while the congressmen took cover
- They were both shot as was Zachary Barth, a congressional staffer for Texas Rep. Roger Williams
- The shooter was described as 'white' and middle-aged.' He fired between 50 and 100 rounds from an M4 rifle
- He was eventually shot by the hero Capitol Hill officers who were accompanying Scalise to the practice
- President Trump said the Scalise – a 'true friend and patriot' – was expected to make a full recovery
- Sen. Rand Paul, Rep. Mo Brooks and Rep. Brad Robert Wenstrup all gave first aid to their injured teammates
- The team was practicing ahead of a Thursday night charity game when they were targeted
- All house votes in Washington were canceled in light of the shooting as security in the Capitol was heightened
