[h=1]School comes under fire for 'humiliating' braless 17-year-old by telling her to put BAND-AIDS on her nipples because they were 'distracting her classmates'[/h]
  • Lizzy Martinez, 17, went to school without a bra on Monday and says school officials called her into the dean's office to talk to her about it
  • Martinez says the dean had her put a shirt on under her long sleeve shirt and asked her to walk around, but was not satisfied she was covered up enough
  • Dean sent her to the nurse's office who gave her band-aids to cover her nipples
  • The superintendent's office says the school could have handled the situation better but that students are expected to come to school dressed appropriately

A Florida high-school student who didn't wear a bra one day this week says school administrators told her to cover her nipples because they were distracting her classmates.
The Bradenton Herald reported Friday that 17-year-old Lizzy Martinez decided not to wear a bra under her gray long-sleeve shirt on Monday, and school officials in Bradenton felt she became a target of other students' stares. The school is on Florida's Gulf Coast.
Martinez says the humiliation began when School Dean Violeta Velazquez called her into the office. Martinez felt like she was being bullied by fellow students, but Velazquez said there was a distraction that needed to be addressed.
'She told me that I needed to put a shirt on under my long-sleeve shirt to try to tighten my breasts - to constrict them,' Martinez told the paper. 'And then she asked me to move around.'

Lizzy Martinez, 17, wore this to school and was brought into the dean's office who said her lack of a bra was a distraction

The female dean had her put a shirt on underneath and asked her to move around but was still not satisfied so she sent Martinez to the nurse's office who gave her band-aids to cover her nipples, the girl claims

Apparently the second shirt was not enough, Martinez said, because she was then sent to the nurse's office. The nurse handed Martinez four bandages, two to cover each nipple, leaving her in tears.
Martinez tweeted about the incident later in the day, expressing her frustration at the school.
'I decided not to wear a bra today and got pulled out of class bc one of my teachers complained that it was a ''distraction to boys in my class.'' My school basically told me that boys' education is far more important than mine and I should be ashamed of my body.'
She later tweeted at the school to 'Stop sexualizing my body,' but the school's Twitter account blocked her soon-after.
On Thursday afternoon, the school district acknowledged that Braden River school officials could have handled the situation better, but the district said it was only trying to enforce the district's dress code.
'This matter was brought to the attention of the Superintendent's Office for review,' the district's general counsel, Mitchell Teitelbaum, said in a prepared statement.
'It is undisputed that this matter should have been handled differently at the school level and corrective measures have been taken to prevent a reoccurrence in the way these matters will be addressed in the future.'

Martinez says she was humiliated by how the school handled the situation and that she was unfairly treated

Teitelbaum went on to say Martinez violated the dress code by dressing in a way that distracted other students, and that school officials were only trying to help her fix the violation.
'You are expected to dress appropriately for school and for the business of learning with proper attention given to personal cleanliness, grooming and neatness,' the district's Code of Student Conduct states.
The dress code does not specifically address or require bras.

I went to high school 45 years ago and what some girls wore then was more distracting than what this girl is wearing. Anyone who agrees with what the school did here needs their head examined. The girl did nothing wrong.

id say based on what the dress code says, she is in the right for fighting back. She broke no rule. I agree her fight is probably a useless cause but she isn’t the one who did anything wrong here.

I'm was just thinking that the boys that love to stare at her nipples are going to be overjoyed at her decision to go au natural.

Based on the pic above, I don’t get what all the fuss is over. Unless that’s a pic with bandaids in place, I don’t see any nipples. Like I said earlier, when I went to high school over 45 years ago, girls wore outfits more distracting than that. I’m so glad I grew up in the 60’s and 70’s instead of this fucked up world we live in now.
