BOOKIE ARRESTED
CUMBERLAND — A Monday search and seizure of a Mount Savage residence — the result of a yearlong investigation — turned up more than $100,000 in cash and other evidence of illegal gambling, according to Tfc. Kevin Detrick, a Maryland State Police investigator assigned to C3I.
“We’re talking about a bookmaking operation,” Detrick said at C3I headquarters Tuesday afternoon. On a table in the conference room, authorities were showing the money, the cash that came in denominations as high as $500 bills.
“The majority of the bets placed were on college and professional football and college and professional basketball,” Detrick said.
Investigators gathered evidence following use of the search and seizure warrant and also tapped the suspect’s phone for 120 days. The phone tap was legalized by an Allegany County Circuit Court judge, Detrick said.
Also seized Monday was the suspect’s sports utility vehicle, which Detrick said was used as part of the alleged bookie practices.
Detrick would not name the suspect, saying charges in the case are pending.
“During the investigation we identified several other suspects as being involved in a multistate bookmaking operation in Maryland, Pennsylvania and West Virginia,” he said. “This expands our investigation.”
The investigation was begun because a concerned citizen came and asked for help, according to Detrick.
“During the 120 days of the phone tap, we would check the tapes every day,” Detrick said, adding that about 5,000 calls were made to or from the residence during that time.
Detrick said evidence shows bets were placed by phone, but that a portion of the illegal activity included the use of what are known as parlay cards used to bet on football games.
“This is an uncommon crime for Allegany County,” Detrick said. “It is also a case that required the most involved, in-depth effort and use of manpower and resources in my 14-year career.” Extensive surveillance of the suspect and the suspect’s residence and vehicle were involved, Detrick said. The search and seizure warrant, obtained Friday, was executed Monday evening following eight hours of surveillance.
State’s Attorney Michael Twigg commended C3I and Detrick on the extensive investigation.
