BOOKIE ARRESTED

CUMBERLAND — A Monday search and seizure of a Mount Savage residence — the result of a yearlong investigation — turned up more than $100,000 in cash and other evidence of illegal gambling, according to Tfc. Kevin Detrick, a Maryland State Police investigator assigned to C3I.

“We’re talking about a bookmaking operation,” Detrick said at C3I headquarters Tuesday afternoon. On a table in the conference room, authorities were showing the money, the cash that came in denominations as high as $500 bills.

“The majority of the bets placed were on college and professional football and college and professional basketball,” Detrick said.

Investigators gathered evidence following use of the search and seizure warrant and also tapped the suspect’s phone for 120 days. The phone tap was legalized by an Allegany County Circuit Court judge, Detrick said.

Also seized Monday was the suspect’s sports utility vehicle, which Detrick said was used as part of the alleged bookie practices.

Detrick would not name the suspect, saying charges in the case are pending.

“During the investigation we identified several other suspects as being involved in a multistate bookmaking operation in Maryland, Pennsylvania and West Virginia,” he said. “This expands our investigation.”

The investigation was begun because a concerned citizen came and asked for help, according to Detrick.

“During the 120 days of the phone tap, we would check the tapes every day,” Detrick said, adding that about 5,000 calls were made to or from the residence during that time.

Detrick said evidence shows bets were placed by phone, but that a portion of the illegal activity included the use of what are known as parlay cards used to bet on football games.

“This is an uncommon crime for Allegany County,” Detrick said. “It is also a case that required the most involved, in-depth effort and use of manpower and resources in my 14-year career.” Extensive surveillance of the suspect and the suspect’s residence and vehicle were involved, Detrick said. The search and seizure warrant, obtained Friday, was executed Monday evening following eight hours of surveillance.

State’s Attorney Michael Twigg commended C3I and Detrick on the extensive investigation.

This quote irritates the crap out of me..................

“This is an uncommon crime for Allegany County,” Detrick said. “It is also a case that required the most involved, in-depth effort and use of manpower and resources in my 14-year career.”

LMFAO!!

Allegany must be one of the leading counties in the nation with NO crime if this case took the most manpower of this department!!

However, I highly doubt it is.

I am sure your county is riddiculed with prostitutes spreading aids, drug dealers dealing to innocent teenage kids, murderers, wife beaters, etc., etc., ...........but I fully understand using up all your manpower to bust this bookie.

Congrats, .........YOU FREAKING MORON!!

This country is still very Puritanical, so we will never see this. The Pilgrims came over from England and started this country. They left because they were not allowed to sing Psalms through their noses. Now they are over here ,running this country.

I can't decide which "crime" to be more hysterical about, bookmaking or Janet Jackson's bare tit. All I know is, as a good American I must do my part and obsess about these things without allowing any intelligent thought to infect my otherwise pure mind.

"Prostitutes spreading AIDS"??? Get a clue. Prostitution, gambling, drug use, etc. all qualify as immoral. Just because one of about 100,000 bookmakers in this country got busted don't get your panties in a bunch.

Sorry, but as a U.S. citizen I am much more concerned with armed robbery, murders, sex crimes, fraud schemes, domestic violence, serial killers, drunk drivers, underage porn, etc,etc,...........than I am with John Doe booking some freindly bets........and in fact, am not concerned with Mr. Doe at all!!

READ THE OFFICERS QUOTE..........GIVE ME A FREAKING BREAK!!

Since when does public policy in the U.S. revolve around what one citizen who lives on the fringes of the law is "concerned" with? Last I checked, maintaining a decent society for ALL citizens was far more important. If you want legalized gambling, there are plenty of countries with lower moral standards willing to accept you. If you want to make an argument on solid moral or ethical ground, then I'm sure the U.S. Government would be much more willing to listen to you.

(Please, no replies about current immoral or unethical U.S. public policy. We all know many cases exist, but two wrongs does not make a right.)

Thank you Dante.

As the National Gambling Impact Study Commission prepares to release its report on the social and economic impacts of gambling in the United States, a new Gallup Poll Social Audit shows nearly two-thirds (63%) of American adults approve of legalized gambling, while 32% oppose it.

Show me one legitimate moral code that endorses or even accepts gambling. Actually, don't waste your time because you won't find it.

Public policy should not be made based on the fleeting will of the people at any given time. You are way out of your league here, Fishhead. Stick to playing slot machines for a living.

America has lots of problems like obesity, heart disease and diabetes from bad dieting habits, liver disease from excessive drinking and an overall coursening of societal standards regarding language, dress and general behavior. Legalizing gambling on sports will solve none of those problems and most likely will only make things worse. If gambling is your vice (like it is for yours truly), then live outside the law and just accept that your inconvenience is for the betterment of society.

Nick-

Am more upset at the rigors the political and law enforcment agencies take to crackdown on these illegal bookmakers than I am about not having legalized sportsbetting.

Dont worry, the great citizens of this country will only take so much.....you wait and see!

Nick,

A U.S citizen has a right to have an abortion but doesn't have the right to gamble?

Just as lottery ticket sals go to education in many states, so too could gambling revenue go towards research for solving some of the problems in society.

truth-

The one that always baffled me was how can one be drafted at 18 years of age into the armed forces and put their life on the line, but not be allowed to drink a beer until their 21?

And these politicians that dont want casinos built in their area because it will cause havoc on families that will lose their life savings!.........HUH?........what about the thousands the casino will employ that dont have a job now?? Casinos bring restaurants, bars, hotels, etc...........JOBS!!!

If not based on the will of the people, then what should it be based on? The will of a few leaders/dictators? Also, if man has been gambling for hundreds of years, then what makes it "fleeting will"?

I suspect the MAIN reason states don't want more legalized gambling is because it would cripple the lotto sales.

States make a mint off of lotto and pay large bucks to insider friends and family. The payoffs and odds are far worse than any bet by the most novice person in a casino or sportsbook.

Lotto is advertised and more or less forced on the public. Not public at large, but the people who are vulnerable. I will guarantee you lotto harms far larger numbers of families than any other form of gamling. It is too easily available and is advertised 24/7.

Jackass politicians have no moral problem with gambling, they only have a problem with them losing control of the money!

Many law enforcement people are just interested in getting their name in the paper. Kind of makes it appear they are doing something for the pay! They would always rather entrap young people or arrest a 90 yr old bookie than do something truely valuable for the community.
After all... if you go after the guys selling the drugs to the school kids... those guys have guns!
