McCain Lawyers Investigated Obama Citizenship

As we asked earlier this week, if questions over President Obama's citizenship were valid, wouldn't they have come out during the presidential campaign?

David Weigel talked with Trevor Potter and other lawyers for Sen. John McCain's presidential campaign who said that they did look into the Obama citizenship rumors and found them without merit.

Said Potter: "To the extent that we could, we looked into the substantive side of these allegations. We never saw any evidence that then-Senator Obama had been born outside of the United States. We saw rumors, but nothing that could be sourced to evidence. There were no statements and no documents that suggested he was born somewhere else. On the other side, there was proof that he was born in Hawaii. There was a certificate issued by the state's Department of Health, and the responsible official in the state saying that he had personally seen the original certificate. There was a birth announcement in the Honolulu Advertiser, which would be very difficult to invent or plant 47 years in advance."

What a stupid article.

What about to the extent that they couldn't look at the long form birth certificate?

Which is what is needed to prove it.

Classic Straw Man article...morons.

you know, the fact that his birth was announced in a local paper seems to be proof enough for me.

Sure...until you realize that the agents of Them were able to sneak into the computer and microfiche archives of the Honolulu Advertiser and insert the faux birth announcement once They determined that Barack Obama would be Their next lap dog who answers only to Them.

That's an odd statement to make.

Why?

barman kind of summed it up. i could maybe believe that birth certificates could be doctored once gaining political promise, but the fact that a hometown paper had a brief announcement 47 years ago adds a bit of realism for me. it's just the added detail i guess. i've been studying creative writing recently, and it's those minute details that add credence to story....

don't tell me you think that once obama became a major contender that someone was able to go back and doctor a newspaper announcement from decades ago...

I just find it odd that you are locked into just one explanation.

I'm sure Obama's parents realized the advantages of their son having US citizenship.

If...and I'm only saying if....they were out of country but realized the Hawaii loophole...why not call in the birth announcement for the paper.

It could of came from anywhere...he was born on Aug 4...the announcement was kind of late on Aug 9th ...so it seems to me anyway.

Who knows for sure?

Just saying the papers announcement, is not any proof whatsoever.

true, but announcements always come out after the fact. it depends on how often the paper gets published. if they didn't publish on weekends, and he was born on a friday, there's a good chance the announcement wouldn't be in the paper until monday at the earliest, and maybe as late as wednsdays. call me morbid, but when i look at the obituraries in my local papers sometimes the write-up comes after the funeral services. going to a funeral is a good way to escape house arrest in the afternoons....

All good points...but the bottom line is that a birth announcement in a paper is not really proof either.

And there is still the unexplained confusion about which hospital?

In his book Obama named one hospital...later he named a different hospital.

Neither has ever owned up to it...or a delivering doctor stepped up...or been named...ect.

It smells funny.

Four to five days not that unusual for those type of announcements, especially if that page was only printed once a week, as it in many newspapers.

What was the lag time for birth announcements at The Onion in 1979?

You can "announce" anything you want in pretty much any paper you want.

It's just that. An announcement.

maybe if they looked more closely at the aunt who we know is here illegally....not sure how much mccain was able to get into that considering his limited resources, and the press wasn't trying too hard to dig up dirt on obama....maybe there might be something there that could lead to the truth...

just sayin

I say screw this whole debate. All the dumb mother fuckers who watch MTV and want to get a hand out are getting exactly what they voted for. Give me some dap....yo word to yo motha....when is my check coming in the mail? Give the people what they want. A bunch of Clinton Re-treads packaged up as Hope and Change.

More of the same if you ask me.

They didn't have any...but used Walkmans like the one you use to follow baseball were going for about 17 bucks. :103631605

That Used Book Sale ad is obviously photoshopped, because if the Kook/Tard rally is on Aug 4, there's no way someone would advertise a Jan 27 garage sale

Insults are always a sure sign of a weak argument.

The bottom line remains...a birth announcement in a paper does not prove anything in any court or legal proceeding in the good old US of A.

It's not even arguable.

Nuff said. !~~~!d1g1t
