I think I meay need to repeat my warnings weekly about why the RPI is SO POORLY designed. It would be comical if it were not for the fact that the selection committee actually uses it to determine the fate of universities which can mean millions of dollars.
It's a total fraud.
I also read that Illinois could go 30-0 and be ranked 8th. I checked with RPI and asked them this -- if one were to eliminate Illinois' lowest 3 rated teams from their schedule entirely, making them 17-0 instead of 20-0 (most teams have played 17 games now, not 20), what would then be Illinois' ranking. I was told they would then jump 6 spots to #2.
Think about this folks....think about this. Illinois won those games by very large margins and they are simply "punished" for essentially playing (and winning) more games than the competition. How exactly does winning those games make them a worse team?
You can tell that the strenght of schedule is flawed when you notice that NO TEAM has beaten more Top 50 teams than Illinois. So how exactly is their SOS 89th? Well, because as I said above, they played a few EXTRA games against weak competition (one of those being Longwood because Okla St pulled out of the Vegas tourney). If you can successfully rationalize this, please let me know, you are likely to be successful as a peace negotiator in Iraq.
The RPI rankings are worse....MUCH WORSE....than the BCS. I wouldn't put it past a creative litigator to sue the NCAA if they punish a team because of this flawed ranking system.
