INDIANAPOLIS - A man who was laid off last week from his job at a tractor factory claimed a $89 million Powerball prize Monday with the sole winning ticket.

Tim Rivers said he and his wife, Pam, plan to buy a new house and move out of their mobile home in the town of Salem in southern Indiana.

The couple, who are both 24 and have two young children, opted for the cash option and will receive $49.9 million before taxes, a Hoosier Lottery spokeswoman said.

"Winning that much money terrified me," Tim Rivers said, adding that when he realized Saturday he had a winning ticket he immediately called a financial planner.

Pam Rivers, who works at a daycare center, said both she and her husband plan to return to school and she hopes to become a nurse.

They have a 6-month-old son, and a daughter, 4.

The winning numbers for Saturday night's drawing were: 11, 44, 45, 48, 50 and Powerball 2.

This is a crock said to look good, most people piss away their lotto winnings within 3 years.

Why go to school when you have enough cash to live off the interest for the rest of your life.

Salem is 30 minutes from me and a conference opponent in high school. If this kid was an athlete I would have played against him when I was a soph and I was a senior, I think that would be the first millionaire I played against.

Give the guy a break, he probably had 1-5 tix, he won !

Too many people plan their retirement on winning the lottery. I don't think the guy will blow it.

The guy that shouldn't have won was that guy Whittaker, that keeps 500k in the trunk of his car, and already was a millionaire.

I'm not someone that plays regularly, in fact rarely. However once or twice a year (when the jackpot is like 250 million, I'll buy like 50-100 tix. It's not smart, but that kind of money really changes your life.

It's the idiots with scratch-off tickets that irritate me ! Is $1,000 going to change your life ? Even worse the daily numbers. Pick a 1,000:1 number for 50 cents, box it, what the hell do you win ?

Lotteries are bad value, but if you must play, go for the millions.

At least it sounds like it went to someone that needed it.

If I won, I'd say I'm going to forget everyone I ever knew, take the money to Vegas, try to double it and turn it into real money, buy kilos of coke, wipe my ass with $100 bills, leave my wife, party it up.

Some of it isn't true, but I'd like to see that in the USA today !

I am very glad for the man and his family. What a dream come true. For those of us who will never see fortunes, I like to think there is a reason.

Best of luck to Tim and Pam.

After tax, the boy has 32.5 million dollars. Hard to blow that in a lifetime. Even with a wife and 2 kids!
