GAME NOTES: The Niagara Purple Eagles are coming off an embarrassing loss, and
they will attempt to bounce back strong tonight against the Yale Bulldogs
at Gallagher Center. Yale has stumbled out of the gate to a 2-4 record, and
the most recent loss came on Saturday to Bucknell by a score of 73-65 in
overtime. Considering that the Bulldogs also dropped a one-point decision to
Radford in the season-opener, their record could easily be 4-2 at this point
and in a much better position. As for Niagara, it had a four-game winning
streak snapped on Saturday with an embarrassing 97-89 loss to Loyola-Maryland.
Loyola has been one of college basketball's worst teams in recent years and
entered Saturday's tilt with an 0-5 record, so the Purple Eagles were expected
to win easily. Still, they do own a 4-2 mark, including a 1-1 mark in MAAC
action, and they have the talent to get back on track. Niagara recorded a
79-62 victory over Yale last season in the first-ever meeting between the two
teams.
Yale has been able to get solid offensive contributions from several different
players thus far, as four Bulldogs are averaging double figures in points.
Edwin Draughan leads the way as expected, as he is netting 15.7 ppg to go
along with 5.7 rpg, 4.2 apg and 2.0 spg. Dominick Martin adds 14.5 ppg on 64
percent shooting from the floor, and he is also tied for the team lead with
7.8 rpg. Alex Gamboa (11.3 ppg) and Casey Hughes (10.2 ppg) round out the
solid foursome, and Hughes is the other player grabbing 7.8 rpg. In the heart-
breaking overtime loss to Bucknell last time out, Draughan finished with 21
points, seven rebounds and five assists. Martin pitched in 12 points and eight
boards, but he fouled out after only 19 minutes of action. Hughes contributed
10 points and eight rebounds for the Bulldogs, who connected on only 36.5
percent of their field goal attempts in the tilt. A 48-36 rebounding deficit
hurt Yale as well, as did the fact that it committed five more turnovers than
its opponent.
Loyola entered Saturday's game with a 14-game losing skid, so Niagara has some
reason for concern. The Purple Eagles shot 39.2 percent from the field and
60.6 percent (20-33) from the foul line, while the Greyhounds shot 54.9
percent from the floor and 69.8 percent (37-53) from the charity stripe.
Standout senior forward Juan Mendez led Niagara as usual with 20 points and 13
rebounds for his first double-double of the season and 27th of his career.
Lorenzo Miles tied his career-high with 17 points, including 5-of-10 shooting
from three-point range, while James Mathis tallied a career-high 17 points as
well. Alvin Cruz added 13 points and a game-high seven assists in the loss.
For the season, Mendez is scoring 26.0 ppg on 54.3 percent overall shooting,
and he is also pulling down 8.7 rpg. David Brooks adds 13.3 ppg to the lineup,
but he is shooting below 40 percent from the field. Mathis is contributing
11.2 ppg and 8.5 rpg, and Miles rounds out the double-digit scorers with 10.8
ppg as the top threat from long range.
Expect Niagara to be dominant from start to finish tonight, as it is too good
not to bounce back after such an embarrassing loss on Saturday. Mendez will
post huge numbers as usual and get plenty of help along the way.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Niagara 88, Yale 63
