(04-26) 10:24 PDT MILWAUKEE (AP) --
A congresswoman's son and three Democratic campaign workers were sentenced Wednesday to four to six months in jail for slashing tires outside a Bush-Cheney campaign office on Election Day 2004.

The men pleaded no contest in January to misdemeanor property damage. A fifth worker was found not guilty.

"This case had to be a public example of what can happen when you interfere with voters' rights," said Milwaukee County Circuit Judge Michael Brennan, who rejected prosecutors' recommendation of probation for the four men.

The state Republican Party had rented more than 100 vehicles to give rides to voters and poll monitors on Nov. 2, 2004. The cars were parked outside a GOP campaign office when the tires were punctured. The vandalism left the drivers scrambling for new vehicles.

Among those sentenced Wednesday were Sowande A. Omokunde, the son of U.S. Rep. Gwen Moore, D-Wisconsin, and Michael Pratt, the son of former acting Milwaukee Mayor Marvin Pratt.

"I love my son very much. I'm very proud of him," Moore said. "He's accepted responsibility."

Omokunde was sentenced to four months in jail; Pratt and Lewis Caldwell of Milwaukee were sentenced to six months; and Lavelle Mohammad of Milwaukee was sentenced to five months. All were granted work-release privileges.

Brennan also ordered them to pay a $1,000 fine each, in addition to the $5,317 in total restitution ordered earlier.

The four could have faced up to nine months in jail term and fines of $10,000.

Wisconsin's 10 electoral votes in the 2004 election ended up going to Democrat John Kerry.

Conspiracy theory alert:

What's the penalty for rigging vote machines, then??

(Actually a little surprised these guys didn't get more. Preventing people from voting is pretty serious stuff. I mean, even the Supreme Court hears cases like this ... oh, wait, never mind.)

Anyone who tries to prevent someone from voting deserves what they get. Base, that includes your party also.

Right you are, Judge. I'd have loved to see you handle this case on The People's Court!

So what punishment do you think should be given to Kathryn Harris and her staff while FLA Sec. of State in 2000 for the way they intentially allowed tens of thousands of legal voters to be purged from the voting rolls via the felon purge list? It would be unbelievably hypocritical not to be completely outraged by that. Does the fact that roughly 75% of these legal voters who showed up at the polls only to be turned away had intended to vote for AL Gore make it okay? Unlike Wisconsin in 2004, it did make the difference in that state and ultimately the entire country.

If they were proven guilty of any wrong doing give em some jailtime.Am I supposed defend her illegal actions (provided she engaged in any)? The fact is if the voting systems in the country were unified into one mehtod alot of problems would be solved.

Agreed. However, It looks like they've gotten away with it. These aren't the type of people that do things so blatant like slashing tires. The point is thousands of voters were denied their constitutional right to cast a ballot as a result of their actions.

I don't know how anyone could defend these actions. Just saying it would be hypocritical to say that you can't mess with someone's right to vote and not be totally outraged by what Jeb Bush and Kathry Harris did in 2000. Are you questioning that this didn't happen? If so, here's a link to a short film by Greg Palast.

if they were guilty of slashing tires then they should be given community service and pay for replacement tires. that goes for anyone that does this political or not. but not jail lails are crowded enough.
