I just came back to CR from Cincinnati after a month up there.

First of all I gained like 10 lbs. Everything is so cheap compared to CR, it was incredible. Things like food, electronics, even vegetables were much less expensive than here. Even when dining out, the cost is comparable to resturants in CR and the American beef is so much better.

The homes there were surpisingly high for rent or sale but the prices are the same as CR.

I was also surprised at how friendly the people were in the midwest.

All in all what I came back with is CR is not that cheap anymore. If I ever moved back to the U.S I would never leave.

LOL....While you're laying out, enjoying the dirty "white" sandy beaches of CR, your car windows are getting smashed out to rob you of about $20 worth of shit.

BTW...I'm in Florida and the beaches of CR are minor league in comparison with what we have here. It's something called "quality".

That was the other thing. We had street parking where we stayed and our car was not touched the whole month we were there.

I highly doubt that would be the same in CR since my car was stolen about 3 months ago in Sabana.

American...how much did you lose with the brothers?

Although I had a small amount with the brothers from time to time, 10 or 15 dimes, I didn't actually have anything with them when they ripped everyone off, with the cooperation of the CR government.

However, I might as well of had money with them as I had business interests in CR that took hits because of the tailspin it caused for the small, fragile economy of Costa Rica. Anyone who operated a business or owned real estate in CR lost money because of the demise of the operation. Through the trickle down effect, the whole country lost because property values have plummeted since then and business is contracting, with money and jobs getting tighter every day.

I hope that clarifies things for you.

well yes it does clarify it for me as to why you seem to be so incredibly angry, at least there is a reason to your continous and rather old bashing of Costa Rica, I don't blame you there are many lost souls such as yourself that have rather unrealistic expectations as to what living abroad means. Many hit a certain age and believe that by moving somewhere else they might have a fresh start and everything would solve by itself.

Reality hits them when they discover that you there is no such a thing as a "home away from home", specially when many of the americans that move here don't even come close to learning the language of the country they want to live in. As a result, many problems arise and eventually they return pretty frustated to where they came from.

Specially bad is the situation where it's the first time they leave home and they seem to think that the rest of the world is exactly like their good ol' neighborhood.

Economy is bad all over if you haven't noticed, for example right now the outsourcing of information technology jobs is leaving the US with nothing else but a "Taco bell" future for all the people that can't possibly achieve a university degree. So while thousands of jobs leave the US market to locations such as India many people with extremely high qualifications are left with few choices. "Sorry we prefer to hire Chandra Rawdanasadar, its cheaper", "We are moving our manufacturing plan to Costa Rica, its 30% of what it costs us to run it here"

Isn't it a paradox that the medicines that are produced in the States are cheaper in Canada? Perhaps they prefer to screw their own citizens and make the canadians pay less for the very same pill?? Good luck having a health insurance , we will only take your business if its a safe bet.

I find it impossible to believe that vegetables can be cheaper than here but perhaps someone can post a figure for any vegetagle here to show me that I am wrong?

On top of that add the constant lose of privacy, here a link for your perusal

on how it is that all these obsession with privacy it's being quickly erradicated under the pretext of "war under terrorism" , I don't mind but perhaps the american citizen does since it's one of their most valued beliefs.

All in all it's nice to know that everytime that you click in the "post" button anything you say it's going to be the same exact thing...........can't you get it out of your chest? Take it easy, you don't want to have to pay for high blood pressure medication, it's gonna be expensive

Truthteller, I thought you were comparing Costa Rica to the US not just San Jose...because I think there’s nothing pretty about South Central LA or Harlem, NY.

I do think there's more to Costa Rica then San Jose or Del Rey Hotel...go to Papagayo Gulf, Drakes Bay, Gandoca-Manzanillo...see the real deal.

My point is there’s good places and bad places in every country.

Wolfie....Don't worry about me. I've moved on and that's it. However, when people come on the forum and ask what it's like down in CR, I'm going to tell them.

CR was a great place to live FOR A WHILE. One thing that happened is too many Americans moved down there with the flood of all these sportsbooks and the free money with the brothers and those asshole Cuban clowns. Nothing good lasts forever it seems.

Anyways, I left CR WAY better off than when I first came down there. So, sorry to say this but... I win. I'd do it all over again if I had too. Apart from financial gain, it was an incredible, eye-opening learning experience for me.

I'm not going to paint a rosy picture of that country though because overall it's a shit product. Even Ticos are bitching about living there now. That wasn't the case 5 or 6 years ago. I know what I'm talking about.

Sure, there are bad places in the states...Watts in LA, Harlem, as you mentioned. Every city has a shit section of town. The difference is in the states, you can stay out of high crime areas. I'm not going to go to the shit sections of town.

In CR, you can't get away from the crime. It's all over the place. And because there was no planning involved, you have mansions that are next to shantytowns. In Sabana Oeste, there are $300,000 homes with 50 yards of $10,000 homes. That creates security issues. Why do you think there's a guard on every corner and bars all over the f*cking houses? Maybe I'm the only one that sees this. I don't know.

You guys make me feel like I'm taking crazy pills or something.

And Tarheel, how many days a year are you spending at these wonderful beaches you keep bringing up? Sure, there are some decent places, but spending a week or two a year at the beach is not worth putting up with mountains of unending bullshit the other 50 or 51 weeks.

My take on CR is this....It's a fine place to visit...just don't live there.

Why don't you guys just all say it...it is all in the eye of the beholder. After all us Americans just shake our heads and wonder how can almost a million people live in frickin Buffalo??? How about how do even more people live in the no pay, no jobs, crappy weather area around the Rio Grande Valley? I mean there are plenty of crappy places that have millions of residents in this country and they wouldn't live anywhere else because they like it. Want to see a real brain stumper, go to the areas around San Juan, Puerto Rico. These people could just get on a plane and live anywhere in the US and of course many do, but go to San Juan and you will see unreal real estate prices, incredibly low wages for just about everyone (this is the land where the resort bartender is in the middle class but the experienced accountant struggles to pay the bills) and drivers you can't believe. Think Ticos are bad drivers, just try driving down there. Everyone has a 20k car that is a year old and it already has at least 5 dents in it. I mean talk about a place where nice to visit, wouldn't want to live there. Still they mostly stay, often living well off the money they get sent to them by relatives working in New York or Miami.

There is something to be said about finding your own slice of paradise and to the people of Buffalo, Brownsville, and Bayamon more power to you if you can lead a happy life despite conditions most of us would never put up with.

American...I agree with some of the things you say but that's not the point, my point anyway

People need reality pills, if they are coming to Costa Rica trying to find a cheaper/tropical version of the United States they better think it over fifty times, bitching because things are not like they are in the States its nothing but a waste of time

Do you think taxes are high here? try Europe, then we talk about taxes, you even pay a tax for each tv you own!!!!!!, I think Costa Rica is cheaper than the US in some things of course

Education, medical attention and a few other things, food too, utilities are much cheaper, is the quality the same, hell no, does it make me sick to read over and over the same complaints that to me look like ridiculous? hell yes

I am so tired of foreigners that come here for the very first time TO LIVE and then of course they don't like it. People that seriously considers living outside their homeland must think fifty times why is it that they are doing it, its not that easy to move anywhere you feel like specially legally, with the current lack of jobs EVERYWHERE it's really hard to get a work permit unless your qualifications are nothing but absolute top of the line

"eye-opening learning experience for me" that has to be it , I mean, what other countries did you visit/live in before Costa Rica

I also know what I am talking about
