N.J. sends cease and desist letter to affiliates promoting sites not licensed by the state

20 May 2014

By Aaron Todd

The New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement (DGE) has warned six online poker affiliate websites to cease and desist from promoting online gaming sites that are not licensed and regulated by the state of New Jersey.

A letter obtained by onlinepokerreport.com (OPR) to Raketherake.com, a large online poker affiliate, states that the site, "by offering links to sites which may be offering unauthorized online gaming, may be promoting activity that is contrary to New Jersey and federal law."

The letter goes on request that the site remove any links to online gaming sites that "are not authorized under federal law or under thelaw of any State."

Sites that received the letter, according to OPR, include Raketherake.com, CardsChat.com, PokerSource.com, RakeBrain.com, Pokersites.com and one unnamed site. The online poker sites that fall in the crosshairs of the DGE are Bovada Poker, Merge Gaming, Black Chip Poker andAmericas Cardroom.

"We believe this may either taint legitimate sites by associating them with the illegal ones, and conversely may lend the appearance that these illegal sites are affiliated with authorized sites," DGE spokeswoman Kerry Langan said in a statement. "We believe it is unfair to those companies that subjected themselves to our strict licensing and regulatory requirements to have to compete with these illegal sites and entities which are being paid to promote them."

The DGE letter, dated April 17, 2014, preceded a May 14 announcement by the Winning Poker Network — a network that includes Black Chip Poker and Americas Cardroom — that it would stop accepting players from the three states (New Jersey, Delaware and Nevada) that license and regulate online gambling, though multiple high-volume players from those states have reported that they were told they could simply change their state of residence in order to continue to play on the sites.

As of 4 p.m. on May 20, RaketheRake.com and PokerSource.com are continuing to promote brands that have a New Jersey license alongside brands that do not. CardsChat.com and Pokersites.com offer links to sites that are not licensed in New Jersey but do not link to sites that have New Jersey licenses, while RakeBrain.com offers a link to Party Poker, but does not include an American flag icon next to the online room to indicate it accepts U.S. players.

The way I see it is that the State is starting to clear the way for sportsbetting by purging these sites from the State.

It will be here sooner than everyone thinks.

Poker & sports betting should have been legalized here in the states like 10 years ago.......either politicians are being paid off big time or they are just too stupid to realize all the tax money they are missing out on........

AC should have gotten sports betting back in the 80's........mob is paying off some people not to have it legalized since sports betting, especially football season is their biggest money maker.

Also, there are new local casinos popping up everywhere & that will destroy AC.

AC is a dirty city & its just for gamblers, it offers nothing else for people to draw them there unlike Las Vegas.

Like the song says, "when the party's over, turn out the lights"

Sports Wagering WILL start-up for the upcoming football season.

( OCEANPORT — Despite a federal ban on sports betting, stakeholders expect Monmouth Park to host legalized sports betting by the start of the NFL season.

“This is a $500 billion industry, most of which is illegal,” said Dennis Drazin, consultant to the New Jersey Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association, which operates Monmouth Park.

“It would literally save Monmouth Park, save thousands of jobs.

“It would have a big impact on our economy, and we are looking forward to offering the public sports betting in Monmouth Park in September.”)

How it ends, is another story . . but it will start in September.

How is this possible? Does this open the door for online sports betting in the US? I am afraid to get my hopes up too high.

My cousin sent me a text about this & im in disbelief......like you said, let it happen first.

I remember Delaware was gonna have regular sports wagering on side & totals along with parlays just like Vegas & a judge had passed & approved on it & several weeks before football season kicked off, some other judge came out of nowhere & over ruled the previous judge (which to this day boggles my mind how in the world he was allowed to do this) & instead of having Vegas style betting, its just parlays & teasers.

IMO, someone came along with suitcases full of money & bought judges & other officials off.

If Monmouth has legalized sports wagering on everything like Vegas, that will trickle to other states & hurt the mob & other bookies big time!

Then again, I was out in Vegas for 4 months during football season several years ago & I remember meeting people that actually bet with bookies on credit instead of going to the casino to wager, so maybe local books will always be around, thing is they will now have to compete for the business.

Things only getting worse in AC...

(Reuters) - The Trump Plaza Hotel in Atlantic City could shut its doors in September and lay off 1,000 workers, a local newspaper reported, in what could make it the fourth casino to close this year in the faltering New Jersey resort city.

The Press of Atlantic City said in a story posted online late on Friday that an official from Trump Plaza called New Jersey state Senator Jim Whelan and told him the casino, which is owned by Trump Entertainment Resorts, expected to issue layoff notices on Monday ahead of a Sept. 16 closure.

Reuters could not confirm the report. Representatives for Trump Entertainment Resorts, Whelan and a union for the casino's employees did not returns calls.

Trump Plaza employs about 1,000 people, according to regulatory reports.

The seashore casino is one of the poorest performers in Atlantic City, which began the year with 12 casinos. Trump Plaza booked less than half its rooms in the first quarter of 2014, and had the lowest gaming revenue of any of the city's casinos in May, according to state documents.

Its expected closure follows a series of blows for Atlantic City, and would mean the city would have a third fewer casinos than at the start of the year.

The Atlantic Club casino was sold and shut down in January. Showboat, one of Atlantic City's largest properties, has announced it will close at the end of August. The $2.4 billion Revel casino, the city's newest, has said it could close Aug. 18 if a buyer is not found.

Businessman Donald Trump owns a 10 percent stake in Trump Entertainment Resorts, according to a U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission filing the company made last year.

The company, which also owns the Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City, sought to sell Trump Plaza last year to California-based Meruelo Group for $20 million. But investor Carl Icahn, who held the mortgage on the casino, blocked the sale, said media reports at the time.
