BALTIMORE (AP) -- Baltimore Ravens running back Jamal Lewis reported to federal prison camp in Florida on Friday to serve a four-month sentence for using a cell phone to try to set up a cocaine deal, a U.S. Bureau of Prisons spokesman said.

Dan Dunne, the prisons spokesman, said Lewis reported to Federal Prison Camp, Pensacola on Saufley Field at about 11:40 a.m.

``It's a facility where inmates are required to work, and it provides auxiliary work force for the military there,'' Dunne said. ``The chief job for the inmates is grounds maintenance work.''

Many inmates in the facility are drug offenders. The prison is surrounded by perimeter security.

``They're required to be in their housing units at a certain time,'' Dunne said. ``It's a very structured environment.''

Each housing unit has a room where inmates can gather to watch television, Dunne said.

Don Samuel, Lewis' attorney in Atlanta, said he asked federal authorities to assign Lewis to an Alabama prison, but the request was denied because one of the defendants convicted in the same drug investigation is there and because of crowding at that facility.

Lewis was sentenced last month in Atlanta. He had pleaded guilty to trying to set up the drug deal 4 1/2 years ago, a few months after the Ravens chose him as the fifth overall pick in the 2000 draft. No drugs ever exchanged hands.

After he entered his guilty plea, the NFL suspended him for two games and he lost $761,000 in wages.

The penalty was worked out in October as part of a plea agreement in which prosecutors agreed to drop more serious drug conspiracy and attempted cocaine possession charges. After his prison term, Lewis will spend two months in a halfway house and perform 500 hours of community service.

Lewis should be able to return to the Ravens well before the start of the 2005 season. At most, he could miss the opening of training camp.

If he had been convicted of the conspiracy charge, the former star at Tennessee could have faced at least 10 years in prison, although he likely would have received a shorter sentence under federal guidelines. Lewis won the NFL rushing title in 2003, amassing 2,066 yards -- the second-highest total in NFL history.

4 mos for a conversation and he got off easy? they never met and no drugs changed hands. All he really said was "yeah"

I think the only reason they went after him was b/c of his name - they weren't going to do anything until he became famous. 4 1/2 years? it usually takes 1-2 years.
Prosecuters should spend their time and our money on crimes that actually happened and on people that are a threat to society.

I am not a huge fan of Lewis personally, but am a fan of his ability and potential.

Before he came to UT he was arrested in Atlanta for shoplifting or accepting discounts for clothing from a friend that worked at the store - can't remember

Otherwise he is supposed to be a good kid from a pretty good family.

Hopefully he can be forgiven for talking about drugs after he pays his debt to society

He got off easy because he's a rat. He agreed to cooperate with prosecutors and testify against his friend in exchange for a light sentence.

Prison's are filled with cases weaker than his. People who only gave people a ride, not knowing what was up get 10 years. He's a rat, bottom line.

http://www.usdoj.gov/usao/gan/press/10-07-04.html

"In the plea agreement, LEWIS has agreed to cooperate with the United States, including testifying in the upcoming trial of JACKSON. The United States and LEWIS have agreed to recommend that the Court sentence LEWIS to six months of incarceration, fourth months to be served in prison followed by two months in a halfway house. LEWIS has also agreed to perform 500 hours of community service following his release from prison.

Jay C - are you telling me you would not be a "rat" to avoid a 20 year sentence? C'mon my friend....he's doing what any of us would do.

Yes, that's what I am telling you. I would not be a rat. Don't question my integrity. There are many others like myself who feel the same way. Unfortunately there are many who would give up their grandmother to save a day in prison.

I couldn't sleep knowing someone else was doing my time.

I wouldn't even plead guilty to avoid prison time. I told my lawyer day one, I don't care of they kick it down to littering you will not hear the word guilty roll off my tongue. (My case is probably one of the 10 cases in the last 20 years that didn't involve a rat.)

The whole Federal system is based on ratting. They pick someone up, they tell them that if you give us three other people, we'll go easy on you. It's a vicious cycle. The Feds don't know how to make a case without one. Look at the Enron case. They have ALL of the paper work in front of them, the accounting records etc. But they have to cooperate the CFO because that's all they know. And he was the architect of the whole scam, but tehy want to get Ken Lay, he's a bigger name.

This is worse. He will testify against his friend who could get 10 years, some friend.

If everyone stopped cooperating and started fighting their cases, the whole system would collapse but everyone rolls.

his friend put Lewis in that situation and if he were a real friend and a standup guy he would fess up and not force Lewis into the situation. Jamal obviously wasn't involved for the money. He was listening to his childhood friend on the cell phone and went along with what he was saying. Jackson should be helping Lewis and the feds should spend our tax money somewhere else.

Jay C. I respect your opinion but 10 years for a cell phone call? For a drug deal that didnt happen? There is being a man and all but there is also being an idiot. He had the best counsel in the south and they worked this plea. Jackson was going down anyway IMO. The word is here Lewis will cash up his family.

The fed do work deals though no doubt. You wonder how many deals they make with informants that are lying themselves. When they had me at the federal building here there were at least 30 maybe 40 governement agents there. FBI, Customs, DEA, IRS criminal and civil. Not to mention Western Union corp security-a team of 4 former FBI agents. I wasnt allowed to say one word to any of them.

Do you think he would have gotten 10 years for a phone call? If so, there is something wrong with the law. It doesn't make it ok to rat.

What about all of the others who get 10 years for a phone call and don't have anyone to rat on or have the strength of character not to?

Best counsel? I'd like to see his trial record. Most people who had "great" lawyers upon further examination found out that all their lawyers knew was making deals and/or cooperating their clients.

What were you doing down at the Federal building?

Word is that the Paradise guys gave up the Gold Medal guys to save their own behinds from prison. Care to comment on that one?

Ray Lewis, anotehr rat that knows how to sit in court and point his finger.

If the case was so tight against Jackson, they wouldn't offer Lewis a deal, they always need finger pointers.

I never saw Oz, but I have heard of it.

You avoid danger by learning to hold your own and respect other people's space. People inside are beyond polite. You hear a lot of "excuse me" and "pardon me." A lot of "please" and "thank you, " more than on the outside. People go out of their way to be respectful.

Not that I was at such a rough stop but there was an occasional incident and phrases like above generally disarm events before they happen. If you are crossing someone else's territory etc.

Thanks Jay. Oz was a very very violent show. You either belonged to a crew (Whites, Blacks, Latinos, Homos, Italians, Russians, etc ..) or you got f'd with.

Wasn't sure how if that was accurate, or just hollywood'd up.

Jay C, I've got a lot of respect for guys like you. It's funny. Someone will integrity, honesty and the willingness to tell it like it is ends up in jail.....the cowards that stab each other in the back and the people that sit on the fence are the ones running free. They should just turn Congress into a jail. All the prisoners are already there.

Jayc - If I Were Slightly Involved, And Was Facing Very Serious Charges, It Would Not Constitute "ratting" If What Youre Saying Is True And To Shorten Ur Sentence. Ratting Is When You Lie Or Covering For Yourself. In This Case, Jamal Had Little To Do With This. He Should Just Come Clean.
