Never been to Jamaica, have wanted to go, but have been told that due to on-going violence to stay away.

I guess you guys have been and it appears to be ok.

Yea, everything I have heard it is failry safe....just like any city, be aware of your surroundings.

Hell, here in Cincy, Over The Rhine was just rated the most dangerous neighborhood in the US, and I walk around there weekly

My advice would be to stay at the resorts. Also there's lots of people who will hassle you trying to get you to buy their authentic Jamaican crap.

I go to Negril (8 times I think, don't remember) so my only knowledge of Montego Bay is the airport. Customs isn't fun, they usually don't have enough workers.

And yes, there's no reason to go to Kingston.

I went to Montego Bay for my honeymoon. We stayed at Sandals, all inclusive. We had a beachfront house and it was just paradise. This was 6 years ago. All the food and drinks you can consume and everything was on the house of course. Tipping was not allowed. The surrounding area is very very dangerous though. They have the resorts and immediately outside of them is 3rd world hell. I have been in some of the worst neighborhoods in the US too, but its very different in Jamaica. Jamaicans know who is staying at a resort and know when they venture out. We left the resort one night but stayed at the resorts (you can go to all the resorts in Montego Bay and eat, drink, and chill, its included in the price) the rest of the time. There was no reason to leave. I was blasted the whole time.

I don't know if you are into it or not (I'm not anymore but at the time we were), but if you are looking for and kind of drug available, the guys that paddle around in their kayaks all day around the edges of the beach front like they are selling arts and crafts but they each have about half a million dollars worth of drugs in they kayak with them. Just swim out to one of the piers and do the transaction. The stuff was damn near uncut and dirt cheap. Got an 8 ball that must have weighed 5 grams for $70.

I also bought some weed from the cab driver and I have smoked all kinds of weed but it is true when they say Jamaican weed is the best in the world. I stayed high for 7 hours off about 3 hits. I think an ounce of good stuff was like $15. I gave the guy $20 and told him to keep the change lol.

Oh and as for gambling, they had a little area with poker machines, slot machines, etc. Nothing big.

And currency. We used our american dollars for everything there, on resort and off. We did go shopping at some local stores too and they took american dollars.

The only complaint I have of the place was that it is right beside the airport. So planes are coming and going frequently and it gets a little loud. But it didn't really bother us.

I liked hiking Dunn's River Falls when I was there. But the best thing I did was buy Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee as my daughter instructed me to do. Best coffee I've ever drank. Drinking it right now, albeit a diluted version from one of our specialty shops out here.

cruzes used to be a very big part of the economy for Jamaica . many lines had stopped going there due to safety concerns, one cruise director was beaten nearly to death.

Heard it's a lot of common sense is all. Just like any big city, you can find crime anywhere, be smart and you should be ok
