Is Oklahoma college football's best ... of all time?

Midweek musings while thinking this might be a good week to take Baylor and the points, all 53 of them:

• Oklahoma's bound to have a letdown, isn't it?

• To heck with debating whether this is Bob Stoops' best team; a better question is it the best college team of all time?

• Oklahoma State and Texas A&M aren't that bad.

• The Sooners might just win the national championship and every major individual award.

• Tell me again why Cory Ross has been Nebraska's third-team I-back?

• I keep thinking that someday Jammal Lord will show he can throw the football.

• I keep being wrong.

• The Huskers' running game won't wear K-State down in the second half like it did KU.

• Even though dinosaurs were roaming the earth the last time K-State won in Lincoln, I'd be surprised if the Cats don't win comfortably.

• With all due respect to Missouri, the North champ will be decided Saturday in Nebraska.

• Mizzou's Gary Pinkel is learning how difficult that next step is.

• Think Oklahoma State, embarrassed the last two weeks by OU and Texas, might be looking to take some frustration out on KU?

• The good news for KU is that Bill Whittemore might play this week; the bad news is that if he does play, the decision to pull off Adam Barmann's redshirt will be questioned even more.

• Interceptions and all, Barmann was impressive Saturday ... in some ways, maybe even more than the week before.

• TCU? Give me a break.

• Shouldn't a team have to beat somebody to warrant BCS consideration?

• That coach who's led Minnesota to its first nine-win season since 1905 looks awfully familiar.

• Is a major bowl and a $1.06 million salary enough to make Glen Mason forget about Ohio State?

• Say what you will about Mase, but the guy can flat coach football.

• Memo to Joe Paterno: Please, please retire before your reputation is shot.

• Memo to Penn State: Don't even think about firing him.

• So maybe the NCAA won't use Kellen Winslow Jr. for its 2004 preseason public relations campaign.

• Speaking of popping off, tell me again why the Bengals are dissing the Chiefs?

• If Trent Green plays like he did against the Browns, nobody beats KC.

• Someone tell Gary Stills his job on kickoff returns is to block, not run alongside Dante Hall.

• Do the Browns' defenders practice making stupid penalties?

• Kudos to a deserving Angel Berroa for his Rookie of the Year honor, but does he win it if a nearsighted baseball writer doesn't boycott Hideki Matsui on his ballot?

• Let me get this straight -- baseball is America's pastime and yet we can't qualify a team for the 2004 Olympics?

• Did Steve Bartman have anything to do with that?

• P.S. If you can't be kind, at least have the decency to be vague.

They look good so far, but they haven't been tested in a close game yet. They may never be tested but they have 2 games against probably top 10 teams coming up in the Big 12 championship and National championship. It always concerns me when a team hasn't played any close games, how they will react to pressure. Lets not forget Alabama gave them all they could handle and Bama aint that good. That was early in the season, Okla may actually be peaking too early. remember Neb was suppose to roll Texas about 5 years ago and lost,UNLV in Col BBall with Larry Johnson and company were considered the best bball team one year and got beat by duke. Okla still has 25% of the season to play.

I think these guys are untouchable, It will never happen but I would like to see them and Ohio state play for the national championship. With my luck betting against ohio state they probably would win. Lock of the year: OKLAHOMA NATIONAL CHAMPS

This will be the 1st time since 1987 that i've been to every home game in Norman. This team is better than Switzer's 86 squad which had several shutouts. But i can't comment on the 74 or 56 teams. We haven't won anything yet so I'll wait til january 5th til I give my verdict on this squad. It's just hard to imagine anyone being as good as those Miami teams of the late 80's or Nebraska 95. Jason White really makes the difference with this squad. If he doesn't win the Heisman then it's a conspiracy.

chico

those teams in the 70's didn't play any competition until they got to the cotton bowl.
i always heard my dad talking about "oklahoma and the sickly six" division that they played in
there will never be an answer to this question, just an argument to be made

I agree that the competition is better now then in the 70's, but the okla team has only played one team in the current top 25 , although they did destroy them.

2 of the last 3 years an 11 and a 13 point dog won the national championship game outright.

Remember how awesome the 'huskers were until the Orange Bowl in '83? (or was it '81? i'm getting to old to remember).. 48 points in a quarter against Syracuse, 31 in 4 minutes against ISU, outburts like that.. They got beat though, so let 'em win out, then its a debate..

you're correct --- that '83 Husker team was tabbed as one of the best ever ... then they ran up against a bunch of snotty-nosed punks from an upstart program in south Florida who had other ideas about how history would be written ....

No chance! this is a down year for college football, and the other teams are merely making the sooners look better than they are.
