You guys should see the picture on the front page of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution....the 17 year old "kid" is standing there with his arms crossed in his best gang/angry man pose holding his cell phone.....

What a crock.....slow news day in the World when this is national news.

They should have arrested the disorderly prick.

"Parham said the teen's suspension was based on his reaction to the teacher's request. He said the teen used profanity when taken to the office.

"Kevin got defiant and disorderly," Parham said. "When a kid becomes out of control like that they can either be arrested or suspended for 10 days. Now being that his mother is in Iraq, we're not trying to cause her any undue hardship; he was suspended for 10 days."

If you guys could only see what is going on. After 9/11 they changed the rules and allowed students to have cell phones in school though they aren't allowed to use them unless of an emergency. What a crock that is. It is totally out of control. Phones going off in class, down the halls and in the lunch rooms. I hate to sound cold but this one case will create another 1000 cases of "emergencies" where kids will use this situation to get out of their own.

...especially in a situation like that...who knows how often the kid gets to talk to his mom, and he's got some administrator getting in his face about it...a lot of people might have reacted worse

the kid should be able to talk to his mom, but i doubt the kid got suspended for just talking on the phone. all reports indicate that the kid gave some serious attitude to the teacher. And a bigger problem in america (bigger than talking to your mommy in iraq) is a lack of respect these kids have.

i was a teenager once also, but you can be sure i respected my teachers and wouldnt give them **** like this kid apparently did. a small suspension isnt a big deal.

Exactly. Take it from someone who teaches, you have no idea how bad it has become. Judge and Lawrence yesterdays rebelious teen doesn't hold a candle on today's rebelious teen. It's a whole different level. Trust me on that one.

Kids having cell phones is ridiculous anyway. We never needed them. I won't buy the arguement that kids need them in today's society. Seems like that is part of the problem to me.

Exactly, I teach at a high school and while I am sure it is nothing compared to inner city NY or L.A., the majority of people in America have no idea what teaching in a public high school is like these days. People love to bash public schools, and yes there are problems but my assertion is that the problems are mostly due to the "clients" we are forced to serve. By law "public" schools are just that...they are open to any and all so you get "any and all" types of students. We had a kid score perfect on the ACT and at the same time we have kids at the school with mental disorders etc...Think about the worst criminals in prison right now...chances are they were in a public school at one time or another and teachers had to deal with them and somehow teach something at the same time.
I understand the kid wanting to take the call, but if you want to take the call then take the consequences and just keep your mouth shut and take the suspension.

You are right. Kids are allowed to use cell phones afterschool and outside of the building only. (I teach)

Also, you run into kids texting kids constantly if you allow them to use it in class.
