More and more, I am thinking no, from a financial standpoint. In todays world, you can learn whatever you want to learn from the internet (including distance learning) or by apprenticing. It just depends on how motivated and smart the kid is, as the article says. The real money is made with enterprise, and if you work for someone, all they care about is what skills (or business deals) do you bring to the table. My college experience were some of the best times of my life, but all I really did was play for 4 years. From that standpoint, it was worth it, but was it a good financial decision? Probably not. Instead of incurring big debts, I could have been earning those years and learing a trade.

Its ONLY worth it if you want to get a job nowdays! College Degree allows one to make Several hundreds of thousands of dollars more than without one. Sure it takes time and money to get one, but its worth it in the Long haul NO doubt.

if you're smart enough, hard-working enough and motivated enough...not having a degree won't hold you back one bit!

sure, having a degree can give you an advantage at the start...and it can help you get your foot in the door...

but in the end, you're going to succeed in any business based on how smart you are and how good your work is, not on what degree(s) you have.

This place isn't paradise... trust me.

Not really IMO. I am still 6 credits out from graduating with my UG but I have done fine without my degree. I think experience means more IMO.

a 4 year degree gets you almost nothing. To be competetive in the job market you need at least a Masters degree to be able to compete. Most tech jobs (2 years or less of schooling) make as much as college graduate jobs.

Very true. A 4 year degree these days are like a high school diploma. Unless you have a particular skill or talent that you can make a good living off of, getting a grad degree is the best way to go. I couldn't tell you how many doors it opened for me.

I've heard it said that a bachelor degree today is equivalent to a high school diploma 40 years ago. Unfortunately, even if you are extremely intelligent and motivated, the overwhelming majority of employers will not even look at your resume if you only have a high school education. The reason this is so frustrating is because college is so political, and most classes you are taking are completely irrelevant to what you want to learn. I'm a finance major. And yet for some reason, I had to spend 4 semesters taking sociology, math, fine arts, etc., before I could even take 1 finance class. I really wish there were a better way, but you really do need to have a degree.

Did the 4 year thing in the 80's and did the corporate world for 5 years after and hated it. A small contracting business enabled me to pay the 20k a year for school. Guess what I am doing now? The same thing that put me through college and I make more than what I did with my degree. Plus I get 3 months off a year.

To each his own. I would rather live or die by my own merit than suck ass to get up through the corporate ladder.

Agreed. You might be able to get your foot in the door and advance a few levels without one, but if you ever want a chance to make the real money in the corporate world, this is a minimum requirement.

Im only 30 and already pine for my college days.Truly ,if even only from a purely juvenile standpoint they were the best days of my life.Memories that will last forever (or at least until I get alzheimers).

Plus a degree comes in mighty handy if you get it in a field that interests you.Ive seen so many folks get degrees just for the sake of having them.

I majored in Spanish and communication(rhetoric and public speaking).

Most of my friends took bullshit courses :photography, history, art history.

Vey interesting subjects, but none of them use those skills today. they all work in different fields.

I at least wanted to walk away with some skills.

5 years at u of arizona couldn't be beat. It was worth it.

How many of you walked at graduation? I busted my ass off in college...well sort of LOL and didn't walk for my undergrad or Masters degree. My mom was pissed because she's the sentimental type but I didn't care about it at the time. I was more concerned that they had address right to send my degree to.
