WASHINGTON: The Obama administration will call for increased oversight of executive pay at all banks, Wall Street firms and possibly other companies as part of a sweeping plan to overhaul financial regulation, government officials said.
The outlines of the plan are expected to be unveiled this week in preparation for President Barack Obama's first foreign summit meeting in early April.
Increasing oversight of executive pay has been under consideration for some time, but the decision was made in recent days as public fury over bonuses has spilled into the regulatory effort.
The officials said that the administration was still debating the details of its plan, including how broadly it should be applied and how far it could range beyond simple reporting requirements. Depending on the outcome of the discussions, the administration could seek to put the changes into effect through regulations rather than through legislation.
One proposal could impose greater requirements on the boards of companies to tie executive compensation more closely to corporate performance and to take other steps to assure that outsize bonuses are not paid before meeting financial goals.
The new rules will cover all financial institutions, including those not now covered by any pay rules because they are not receiving U.S. government bailout money. Officials say the rules could also be applied more broadly to publicly traded companies, which already report about some executive pay practices to the Securities and Exchange Commission. Last month, as part of the stimulus package, Congress barred top executives at large banks getting rescue money from receiving bonuses exceeding one-third of their annual pay.

All you Lib’s laughed when I said BO was a Socialist, what say you now? ^<<^

If you use that as your definition of socialism, than all politicians are socialists and the only difference is which socialist programs they support

For everyone who is looking to either the POTUS or to Washington DC (or both) as their guide for having a better life in the next eight years (or in years beyond), I wish you well.

I am lokking towards MYSELF not for the next 8 years , BUT for the rest of my life

Unfortunat;ly........Our Country now has a leader who is rapidly "gambling" our future away on industries that are already dead IE auto industry....OR AIG

The amount of funds being burned by Timmy and Barack will have reprecussions felt for the next 30+years

Write that down because it is absolute FACT

If you honestly believe - as do I - in your first statement above, you'll be far less concerned about any actions coming out of Washington DC.

If you honestly believe - as do I - in your first statement above, you'll likely agree that "our future" cannot be unduly damaged by anything happening in Washington. It's a big big world and you and I are blessed to enjoy say, another 40+ years of good life (I'm 49 on Saturday) we must realize that "our futures" will quite likely extend to life outside the current realm we think of being "our country".

We keep our eyes on the ball and our minds open to possibilities beyond the status quo and I'm confident that you and I - and anyone else smart enough and willing enough - will easily outwit any of the bullshit decision making coming out of either this current Presidential administration or any of those which follow during the next several decades.

I’m not sure about the next 40 either… but my oncologist seems to think the next 20 are in the bag assuming that pesky bus doesn’t show up at an inopportune time. By the way I turned 62 yesterday. HOORAH :drink:

Could be, my father is 95 and as far as I know still kicken. His father lived to 96. I'm not concerned about my teeth with the exception of wisdoms I still have them all. I've found that gargling with beer it makes for excellent hygiene. :103631605

First we have….

The new rules will cover all financial institutions, including those not now covered by any pay rules because they are not receiving U.S. government bailout money.

Now….

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama says he cannot "govern out of anger" just because of public outrage over bonuses paid at financial institutions kept afloat by taxpayer dollars.
Obama's declaration came as he pushed for a $3.6 trillion federal budget proposal that already is opposed from within his own party. As he seeks lawmakers' support for his first budget, he took a political risk in signaling discomfort with a separate plan that slaps a punitive, 90 percent tax on bonuses paid to American International Group employees.
Obama, a law professor-turned-chief executive, said during an interview broadcast Sunday that he does not like the idea of "passing laws that are just targeting a handful of individuals" or using the tax code to punish people.
"Let's see if there are ways of doing this that are both legal, that are constitutional, that uphold our basic principles of fairness, but don't hamper us from getting the banking system back on track," Obama said on CBS' "60 Minutes."

I don’t think he has a clue. ^<<^

G-BOY, what are you talking about? I'm confident I'll be paying federal income tax for at least the next 40 years. Though as a business owner I'll likely have a lot more tax advantages than people whose primary income sources come as employees.

As for your daughter, I bless her to have a great life and for cryin' out loud raise her to be smart enough to get her college paid for via scholarships and grants - the latter of which even you as an Obama detractor must admit are more likely to be available if Obama prioritizing remains in play during the 2020-2030 decade.

Or in case you happen to be one of those Obama-detractors who purport that all his educational "breaks" will only be handed out to undeserving, ignorant losers - then raise your daughter to be one of those and she'll make out just fine

You think it will take 40 years to get out of this? Your crazy. Our debt is about to triple....TRIPLE (thats over the next decade, we are in debt $11 trillion now) if Prez BO gets that shit aka budget thru Congress. We don't have enough money RIGHT NOW to pay for all the shit that is coming down the pipe much less Govt run health care, college for everyone, etc. Wake up and smell the coffee we are in debt up to our eye balls and this guy wants to keep going. Whiskey Tango Foxtrot!!!
