The guy in Kentucky is the worst - "From the outside!" in that wheasily, wimpy voice. No wonder they tried having no announcer at Keeneland when I was there in the early 90's. Larry Letterman is great also but he is stuck at some small standardbred track, Yonkers or something. He used to be great at Atlantic City Race Course. When it is real foggy he will give out NBA or MLB scores. TVG has pretty much made alot of these announcers known. To me Trevor is still the best, "Away they go!"

Yes, Tom Durkin is better. He hasn't fallen victim to cookie cutter calls as Denman has in recent years. Catch phrases in a race call are hokey.

Tom "and down the stretch they come" Durkin? That is a catch phrase if I have ever heard one.

He's good too, but he tends to shout!!

Uh...that's not Tom Durkin. That's Dave Johnson, and I agree that call is hideous.

It's funny to hear old NYRA races. It could have been a $10k claimer or a Grade I stake and the call was the same monotone voice each and every time.

As previously noted, Larry Lederman is great. Used to love watching old Garden State and Atlantic City racing at night with him as the caller. He's now employed by Philadelphia Park on a part time basis when not calling races at Freehold. He does the studio "analysis".

Others that wouldn't normally get mention but I think should are Dave Rodman from the MJC-Colonial circuit, Larry Colmus Monmouth-Aqueduct and formerly Suffolk, the guy who does the Meadowlands harness calls, the Woodbine-Mohawk harness calls, and not sure of the guy who calls Canterbury (not Dark Star, but some other guy). Although he tends to say some stupid things at times, he can still make any run of the mill race very exciting. Looking forward to getting out to Shakopee this July.

Thanks for the info Labeeb! I love Colonial and all those big fields on the turf! If only I could pick a winner or two! LOL! After betting Canadian OTB it makes NYRA OTB look like a bargain. BTW , Canadians love their harness racing! And their ain't no better than the Meadowlands, but Woodbine's okay too! Dover would be cool if they weren't smack-dab in the middle of a racecar track!

Thanks Hilo! Never got the pleasure of any of those guys, wish I had! I remember growing up back east wondering how in the hell a track could have such a big handle like 2 million dollars? Then when I finally got out west to LA, I went to the track and saw for myself. I couldn't figure out why the racing form had a binder on the left side like the Daily News! Never saw that before. I guess, like the announcers you grow up with as a child, they are the model of what an announcer sounds like the rest of your life!

I give Tom Durkin an edge on Trevor. Both great at what they do, but Durkin really excites you in his calls. He comes across as a big fan and not some company man.

Trevor is excellent. But so was Joe Hernandez, with his gravelly voice, at Santa Anita in the 60's and 70's. Sad ending as he was kicked by a horse in the stables, thought he was ok, climbed the tower to announce a race and died while announcing it. Can still hear some of his old race calls archived.

Whats the guy's name from Arlington Park, John Dooley or something like that. He does a great job of being excited and understandable at the same time.
