Will be in LA next 4 weeks, Sun-Thurs. Will be staying near LAX in the 6000 W. Century Blvd. vicinity.

Am interested in good places to eat and also any neighborhood-bar type places to spend an hour or two during happy-hour.

Spots within walking distance preferred. Thanks in advance for your input!

Vinividivinci,

Ttinco is right. What I get from your post is that you're going to utilize cabs. In LA that can get real expensive real fast. However, if you have a car, there's no telling if it will be there when you get up in the morning. I stayed one night in Anaheim and that was enough. We were accosted by a Mexican gang at a Church's chicken. I knew we shouldn't have gone there but I picked the last restaurant so you know how that goes. I know it's a stereotype but in this case it was warranted. The very next day we packed up and went to Thousand Oaks . Very nice and clean. We stayed there until we left. My advice to you is if you're not staying with friends or relatives, change your lodging ASAP.

I can't help you on the bar or club scene. If you live anywhere east of the Rockies you have to visit In-n-out. Get a double-double, fries and a chocolate shake. I probably went there every other day. There was a decent Chinese place in Burbank, I think. I can't remember the name but they had these egg rolls with lobster in them.

It was a pain driving down to LA every day but the peace of mind was well worth the hassle IMO.

Go south couple miles on 405 to Manhattan Beach, down at pier is nice. You would be a moron not to get a rent a car.

Rail is right...Manhattan Beach is the spot..during the day or night. Although, I might be biased, as it is my hometown. LOL.

vinividivinci,

Please rent a car. Do not judge LA from your experiences in Inglewood. That being said, head to Venice, Hollywood and Beverly Hills. The last two you can do all in one shot...Venice is worth a full afternoon. Wish I could be more help, but haven't been home in a while, and no longer know what spot is hot.

Isn't Dr. Dre from Inglewood?

Maybe you guys can hook up for a drive-by or two? I think that qualifies as a motor sport

There is a nice rooftop bar at the Radisson I think it is. Has a view of the runways of LAX. As long as you stay on Century or right there around LAX and don't go east of the 405 you probably will be alright. Lots of hotels around there and most have nice bars, but unreal prices because all those guests are expense account people in for conferences or layovers for international flights.

Hey everyone,

I haven't posted in a while as I have been busy working, but this thread "cracks" me up. Vini, are trying to get killed dude? Listen to everyone and go some where else, Redondo, Beverly, any where but there.

It gets better, back in the early sixties My parents lived in El Sugundo and I was born in Inglewood at Daniel Freeman Hospital.

When I go back to cali I can't even find a cab to take me by my parents old house.

Be safe my man and take care.

6000 block of Century is not bad at all. You guys are nuts. A hotel bar will be your best bet around there.

Hottest spots are NOT in Manhattan Beach. Same old surfer dudes and worn out blondes every weekend. Hollywood is the place to go. North is a nice bar and so is Bar Marmont, but those places are pricey. Cat & Fiddle (is that the right name?) is a nice Irish pub. Dublin's is not bad, but busy on weekends. Obviously places like Rainbow Grille, Barfly & Skybar are somewhat trendy depending on what night. I love Miyagi's on a thursday for Sushi, Sake bombing & college girls.

If you are going to walk take Wild Bill's advice.

as others have pointed out - inglewood is NOT the place you wanna be "walking" around late at night unless you wanna get your name in the paper (as in "out of town idiot killed walking the streets of inglewood late at night - anyone dumb enough to do this deserves to be killed.") as others have pointed out - inglewood will never be confused for middle america. if you get a car - a GREAT place to eat (and not too far away) is the "cheesecake factory" in marina del rey. you can eat outside n the shores of the ocean and it is really nice. i do suggest getting there before 6P - because the wait can be alonnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnng one if you get there later then that.

I got a place for you if you like old style steak houses, walking distance, just north of you, but take a cab if you're not getting a car. The Buggywhip, small place, been there forever, looks like an old chicago gangster's hangout on the inside, dark, red leather etc (the movie Blow shot their restaurant interior there) anyway, nice steaks that don't cost $50 per.

UPDATE on trip to LA

Well guys, survived the first week in LA with no gang encounters and name not in the paper (as far as I know). Sorry, did not see any of this prior to departure but find it very interesting in retrospect.

Actually the area where I am staying is very nice. Right next to LAX airport, many very nice hotels in the area. I am travelling to LA again for the next 3 weeks, departing on Sunday and returning home each Friday evening so will have lots more chances to see the sites.

Railbird and Jake are right on the money with their Manhattan Beach suggestion. There is a free shuttle that runs every hour in the evenings from many locations near the airport. Have been to MB twice already and had fun both times. Plan to go again this week coming up.

Wild Bill called it exactly right regarding the area and the hotels. Also right on the money with the prices. A beer in most of the hotels runs $4.50 so if you're having more than one it can add up quickly. I ordered a Rusty Nail and it was $9.00 !! Did not know about bar at Raddison but will check it out this week.

Winky, thanks for the suggestion of the Cheesecake Factory. I had heard it was good and plan to go there one evening next week.

MJRed, really appreciate the tip on The Buggywhip as the old steakhouses have been some of the most memorable restaurants I have visited. Will definitely have to give The Buggywhip a visit.

Although the area I am staying is quite nice, I can see where some of you are coming from. I took the shuttle to Hollywood Park Casino (their designation, not mine) and after travelling about 2 miles south on Century business signs in English were the exception rather than the norm. I walked over to the Target next to the track and was one of only two caucasions in the whole store!! Seemed like a "rough" area.

In summary, thanks to all who took the time to answer my questions. I thoroughly enjoyed my first week and look forward to the next three. All of your thoughts are greatly appreciated.

p.s. I am also hoping, as a life-long Dodger fan to attend a game at Dodger Stadium either Tuesday or Wednesday of opening week.

Try Marina Del ray Plenty places to eat and drink High class area .Also take in Venice Beach Not far

Ellen is right...go to both Marina del Rey and Venice. Marina del Rey is a date spot..relaxing atmosphere. Venice...well...you have probably heard the stories. Have a blast.

Glad you like MB. Hermosa and Redondo are the beaches further south...you can walk the 2 miles or so on the boardwalk.

I didn't get to see the actual track area as there was no live racing. The "casino" area and the card room were fairly clean but most of the crowd, especially in the racebook area, consisted of the busted-out losers you typically see as regulars hanging out at the race track.

The cardroom was very busy (Thursday night) with a small waiting list for many of the games. As an aside, can someone please tell me where they came up with the games they play in the "casino"? They call them "California Games" and some of them are way too wierd.

Anyone unhappy with 6/5 blackjack games in Vegas need not visit this "casino." They play a 6-deck shoe game with one Joker from each deck. To get a blackjack (they call it a natural) you must recieve two jokers on the deal, pays 2-1. All other hands pay even money. Wow, what a game!!
