Would you agree, someone checking and then raising is a douche move??? Someone did that to me last night and I got a little pissed.

(Buried him on the hand by the way.)

If you don't want to be check raised then don't play.... that's part of the game.

Were you all going to give the money back at the end of game? If so, then that's a weak move. If not, that's just part of poker.

VERY subjective. I would say for most friendly games, check-raising would be out, but it really should be decided beforehand. If it's available then it should be able to be used with no bad stigma.

I play friendly games, but we're all frequent poker players. Playing a poker game without check-raising to us is like playing a game of chess with no knights.

If you play a short-handed game and don't allow check-raising, the positional advantage/disadvantage becomes enormous. The button rotates, so each person gets an equal number of shots at the late spots. WIthout checkraising, however, it creates a very big disparity in the advantage from hand to hand.

For me poker is war, friendly game or not. That's what makes the game exciting and challenging. If your goal is to be entertained, and smoke cigars and drink brandy and toss some cards and chips around, then I think check-raising sdoesn't really fit.

Fair enough.

I've played in games where people felt it was kind of "cut-throat" to do it.

Some cardrooms don't allow it which is just stupid. Big part of the game IMO.

You're playing the wrong game if you think that is unfriendly - maybe you should be playing Snap or something more friendly!

solitaire for you my friend

You need to be playing solitaire if you think check-raising is "unfriendly". That is the same as saying "betting the button with nothing is unfriendly

I know what he means about check-raising being unfriendly though. Some games are just set up as social events and are very laid back. They aren't meant to be cutthroat. I think poker is a game of psychology, and if check-raising means that your friends think you're an ass then I think that check-raising might be the wrong move from a social aspect as well as from a money aspect. You may not be invited back.

David I see your point but only if it is agreed before anyone sits down to play. No check raising should be a rule for example like only 3 raises per card. Are head fakes bad form in a friendly game of one on one basketball?

I remember learning how to play poker as a kid in games with my uncles, they were ruthless even with a youngster as I was at the time. The lessons learned back then have prooved useful over the years. One uncle was always table bully saying things like "check you hat - I raise" etc. Ah the memories:cool:

check-raising is strategy pure and simple. saying that it should not be allowed is dumbing the game down.

doyle brunson- if they dont allow check raising, they are such square players that the benefits of playing with them outweigh the loss of losing check-raise.

he's right and its not even close. only suckers object to check raise.

I'm not even by any means a good poker player either

That's what i'm saying and for someone to do it, when no one has done it after 2 hours of playing and doing it because i'm up.

Just to give you an idea of the kind of people playing in this game, after I started jacking up my bets after seeing the first two cards, my name officially had the word "F*cking" before it. :blowup1:

Snap is a game played in England by 3 year olds - it is the first card game kids learn - basically each player turns over a cards (they are divided amongst players) and when two cards of the same number follow one another the first player to call "Snap" wins all the cards - player with all cards at the end wins.

My analogy is that if you want to play Poker then all the rules and etiquette that are associated with it go with that game and that if you feel that it is "unfriendly" to do that then you should take up something a little more friendly like ballet, charity work or playing "Snap"
