My question is pretty simple--I have a friend who owns a sportsbook who is thinking of spending a lot of money on marketing throughout Canada. As a Canadian, do you feel that his money would be well spent or wasted? He asked me, and I thought it was a waste as Canadians overall prefer hockey and could have problems with the exchange rate. Any comments would be great as I am trying to help him avoid flushing a lot of coin down the drain.

For the most part I would look at the population problem. We just don't have the numbers (somewhere around 36,000,000 people). Also, you would be competing with ProLine SportsSelect, the government run sports betting. At the same time though I know a lot of people who gamble online. I live in the Toronto area and see some books advertising in the Toronto Sun everyday so they must get some return out of it.

Toronto appears to be a big gambling town. No offence to gambleman but the gov't Sportsselect is a sad joke so I would not worry about it. It will be hard to try to compete with the established books who advertise in the Toronto Sun ie, Bet 365. But if you have a different angle ie, low juice etc. it should be worth a try. I would concentrate on Toronto, and try Montreal and Vancouver as well. Montreal is football crazy.

WASTE OF MONEY..........Unless of course your friend wants to deal only HOCKEY and CFL....The 2 least needed sports for any BOOK to deal.

I sometimes use Mise O Jeu and its garbage. They only offer parlays and keep your post up and offer you lower payouts.

I operate 4 websites with a Montreal demographic. Email me if you want to advertise on them.. bigd0gg@kingofpicks.com

I can't imagine it being a bad deal to advertise in the Toronto Sun. That is your target market right there -- sunshine girl-lovin blue collar dudes who live in the Toronto area. Pretty efficient medium I would say.

The Toronto Sun worked well for us. Couldn't give any solid numbers on how many sign-ups we've had from them, but I can tell you that it is mostly square for some reason.
