Some of you may know I own a small independant gas station for about a year now. During this time I have met many different people/customers that have become my regulars. One of my regular customers is a 25ish year old guy who I talk to about sports which led to sports betting. It always does.

I mentioned to him I was a bookie 20 years ago and he asked me if I would be interested to take his and his freinds action. They hang out at a local sports bar and he took me to meet them...they really seem like decent guys which is a good thing. After a few beers and some sports banter we got down to business.

Rules

-$200 maximum bet/game
-They post up...no exceptions
-Winning bets to be collected the following day
-Do not talk to me in front of customers/suppliers
-No phone calls

I'm starting with NFL Week One and start slowly and see where this takes me. I have 2 weeks to get a bankroll together and if I need to get into my line of credit...I will. I'd rather not get into debt but things are tight right now. I think $10,000 should be enough to get me started. So far, there about 10 of these guys lined up and I know that number will increase as the season progresses.

Why am I doing this?

Well, quite simply...for money. I make decent money but I also have a shitload of expenses. I work 12-16 hours/day and at the end there is nothing left. I am willing to risk $20k in total for this and not a penny more. If I can make an extra $500 to $1000/week doing this it will be well worth it

I know some you think this may be risky and I could get into trouble but this is small time. Cops wouldn't waste their time on this and besides it's just a fine and no time served because I have no prior convictions.

Question for some sharps here: Which offshore book should I use for odds?

If you guys have some input or suggestions I would like to hear them.

In my opinion it is really stupid to do it out of your store. All cops care about is money and if they do catch on at all and have a chance to take your store, you can bet they will go all out to do so!!

Do it only if your store is "protected", such as you are only an employee there and you have it in someone elses name and you can prove it with out a doubt.

What is your address and soc. sec. # ? This will make it much easier for us when we bust you in October. Also, please have the deed to your gas station close by when we come knocking. Good luck with your new venture.

HAHA....not worried at all about this. Canadian law is much more liberal than you good ole' boys in the south.

10-20k should be plenty if they are posting and paying -110

But if they all talk about a play at the bar and all 10 are making the same plays, you have a much bigger risk.

Use Pinnacle/Matchbook for your lines, and if they are paying -110 on it, you can make a few bucks on them at matchbook/layoff a bit if you are uncomfortable with the level of action.

Sounds juicy, much less chance of a rat doing it post-up rather than having some kid get deep in the hole and decides to make a phone call to the Mounties to try to get out of paying.

Go get em!

Yup...-220 on 200 post up.
No half times, teasers or props. Strictly straight bets.

I suggest using a book like Bodog or Sportsbook for the lines.

Typically, your guys are going to be with the public IMO, thus these will give them the worst lines. One of my good friends books out of his store, and hasnt had a single problem with the cops in over 3 years of running the store.

I think you will be fine as long as you have enough guys playing so that you dont get too "offsides" on certain plays.

If the customers are Canadian, and are posting up, why don't they just Pinny ?

Furmanski hit the nail on the head.

Your biggest problem is not enough diversity in your customer base. It's entirely possible that these guys meet and discuss some games and they all come to the same conclusion. That puts all your cash at risk and now you're gambling.....just like they are, except they have chosen the side.

You can set up an offshore access that you can control. This allows your "customers" to play any game on the board as well as props. You had better look into it.

Good Luck
