Actually it was in Mississippi just north of the La. line. Thanks for remembering just the same. I was 16 at the time with my tickets in hand to go to the concert in BR. LS was my very favorite group at the time.(until I discovered Led Zeppelin :103631605)
I remember the local news guy breaking into the prime time programming to announce the story and my jaw dropped to the floor.
Too sad.

I was fortunate to have seen this simply amazing group on October 15, 1977 at the Hollywood Sportatorium in Hollywood, Florida. 5 days before that fateful evening their plane crashed.

32 years ago tonight the plane crashed.

I was going to high school at the time, and I remember the entire student body was in mourning for days after this tragic event!

These guys were THE BEST! :toast: May their music live on FOREVER!

Mr. Charlie Daniels, a great American, said it best when he said about Ronnie Van Zant and the band:

"A brief candle both ends burning
A weary mile a bus wheel turning
A friend to share the lonely times
A handshake and a sip of wine
So say it loud and let it ring
That we are a part of everything
The present, future, and the past
Fly on proud bird you are free at last"

One of the greatest Boogie Woogie Rock And Roll Bands most Americans have ever known.

Three days after the release of "Street Survivors," Lynyrd Skynyrd's private 1947 Convair 240 turbo prop plane carrying the band between shows from Greenville, South Carolina to Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana crashed near a forest in McComb, Mississippi.

The plane had been having engine trouble before leaving Greenville and literally ran out of gas.

The crash killed singer/songwriter Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist/vocalist Steve Gaines, vocalist Cassie Gaines, assistant road manager Dean Kilpatrick, pilot Walter McCreary and co-pilot William Gray.

Drummer Artimus Pyle crawled out of the wreckage with several broken ribs, and ran to a farmhouse nearly a mile away for help. Johnny Mote, the farmer, greeted Pyle with a gunshot to the shoulder-only when Mote realized Pyle was connected with the plane crash did he call for help.

Allen Collins suffered two cracked vertebrae in his neck, and both Collins and Leon Wilkeson nearly had arms amputated as a result of crash injuries. Wilkeson suffered severe internal injuries and punctured a lung and had most of his teeth knocked out. Gary Rossington broke both of his arms and both of his legs and took many months to recuperate. Leslie Hawkins had a concussion, broke her neck in three places and had severe facial lacerations. Pianist Billy Powell was relatively uninjured in the crash, but nearly had his nose torn off and suffered severe facial lacerations.

My favorite trivia about Lynyrd Skynyrd is that none of the members of the band who wrote or co-wrote "Sweet Home Alabama" were from Alabama. Van Zant, Collins, and Rossington were from Jacksonville, Florida and Ed King was from California. Just thought that was interesting that the greatest and most famous song about Southern Solidarity was written by men who were not even born or raised in the state in which the song was about. 1 2 3 Dant Dant Denna Da Dant Dant Denna Da Dant Dant Da Dona Dona Dona Da TURN IT UP
