I've seen this situation several times, and it makes no sense at all.

Your down 10-11 points, time running out, and you need 2 scores, and one of them has to be a field goal. You drive deep into the red zone, but face a 4th down, with not much time left. Ok, why in the world do you go for it on a 4th and 4, 5, or more??!! You HAVE to have a field goal anyhow, it doesnt matter if you get the field goal or the touchdown first, you still have to have EITHER one of those scores, regardless, so if you run into 4th down, you kick the field goal, if you dont and fail to convert on 4th down, the game is automatically over!.......

I think the theory is you are not guaranteed to get in the red zone again, even if you do convert FG and get ball back. So while it's 4th-and-short in red zone, you make this one play you have high probability of getting the TD.

If it was 4th-and-long, then the probabilities change and you should go for the FG.

Unfortunately for us,Hacheman, this game was doomed from the outset. It was the Northcoast play of the day.Wish I had known that before I bet it.
