Nearly two years ago, I referred to Iraq as our "51st State" when I read the news of Executive Order 13303, which essentially made null and void any debts secured by Iraqi oil in the interest of "national emergency" (although how the US invading Iraq constituted an American national emergency was never really explained.)
But I realise now, with the benefit of hindsight and the introduction of more evidence, that this is not the case at all -- after all, no American state would ever be allowed to get away with owing American soldiers a billion dollars. No, if e.g. Tennessee were to try something like that it would be called the "new Civil War" and Bush would no doubt have the Volunteer State invaded in order to liberate its people from tyranny.
Iraq is, therefore, definately not our 51st state.
Bush is, however, once again conclusively demonstrated to be a fúcking åsshole.
