TIPS ON PUMPING GAS
I don't know what you guys are paying for gasoline.... but here inCalifornia, we are also paying higher, up to $4.50 per gallon. But myline of work is in petroleum for about 31 years now, so here are sometricks to get more of your money's worth for every gallon..Here at the Kinder Morgan Pipeline where I work in San Jose , CA wedeliver about 4 million gallons in a 24-hour period thru the pipeline. One day is diesel the next day is jet fuel, and gasoline, regular andpremium grades. We have 34-storage tanks here with a total capacity of16,800,000 gallons.Only buy or fill up your car or truck in the early morning when theground temperature is still cold. Remember that all service stationshave their storage tanks buried below ground. The colder the groundthe more dense the gasoline, when it gets warmer gasoline expands, sobuying in the afternoon or in the evening....your gallon is notexactly a gallon. In the petroleum business, the specific gravity andthe temperature of the gasoline, diesel and jet fuel, ethanol andother petroleum products plays an important role.A 1-degree rise in temperature is a big deal for this business. Butthe service stations do not have temperature compensation at thepumps. When you're filling up do not squeeze the trigger of the nozzle to afast mode. If you look you will see that the trigger has three(3)stages: low, middle, and high. In slow mode you should be pumpingon low speed, thereby minimizing the vapors that are created while youare pumping. All hoses at the pump have a vapor return. If you arepumping on the fast rate, some other liquid that goes to your tankbecomes vapor. Those vapors are being sucked up and back into theunderground storage tank so you're getting less worth for your money. One of the most important tips is to fill up when your gas tank isHALF FULL or HALF EMPTY. The reason for this is, the more gas you have in your tank the less air occupying its empty space. Gasolineevaporates faster than you can imagine. Gasoline storage tanks have aninternal floating roof. This roof serves as zero clearance between thegas and the atmosphere, so it minimizes the evaporation. Unlikeservice stations, here where I work, every truck that we load istemperature compensated so that every gallon is actually the exactamount.Another reminder, if there is a gasoline truck pumping into thestorage tanks when you stop to buy gas, DO NOT fill up--most likelythe gasoline is being stirred up as the gas is being delivered, andyou might pick up some of the dirt that normally settles on thebottom. Hope this will help you get the most value for your money.DO SHARE THESE TIPS WITH OTHERS!WHERE TO BUY USA GAS, THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT TO KNOW. READ ONGas rationing in the 80's worked even though we grumbled about it. Itmight even be good for us! The Saudis are boycotting American goods. We should return the favor. An interesting thought is to boycott their GAS.Every time you fill up the car, you can avoid putting more money intothe coffers of Saudi Arabia . Just buy from gas companies that don'timport their oil from the Saudis.Nothing is more frustrating than the feeling that every time I fill-upthe tank, I am sending my money to people who are trying to kill me,my family, and my friends.I thought it might be interesting for you to know which oil companiesare the best to buy gas from and which major companies import MiddleEastern oil. These companies import Middle Eastern oil:Shell........................... 205,742,000 barrelsChevron/Texaco......... 144,332,000 barrelsExxon/Mobil............... 130,082,000 barrelsMarathon/Speedway... 117,740,000 barrelsAmoco............................62,231,000 barrelsCitgo gas is from South America , from a Dictator who hates AmericansIf you do the math at $30/barrel, these imports amount to over $18BILLION! (oil is now $90 - $100 a barrelHere are some large companies that do not import Middle Eastern oil:Sunoco..................0 barrelsConoco..................0 barrelsSinclair..................0 barrelsBP/Phillips.............0 barrelsHess......................0 barrelsARC0.....................0 barrelsAll of this information is available from the Department of Energy andeach is required to state where they get their oil and how much theyare importing. But to have an impact, we need to reach literally millions of gasbuyers. It's really simple to do.Now, don't wimp out at this point.... keep reading and I'll explainhow simple it is to reach millions of people!!I'm sending this note to about thirty people. If each of you send itto at least ten more (30 x 10 = 300)...and those 300 send it to at

The web page says that many of these items are in dispute.

Here is a summary:

The bottom line is that there are much easier and better ways of improving the efficiency of your car (and thus of saving you money at the pump) than the tips outlined above. Particularly important is proper maintenance, including engine tune-ups, wheel alignments, tire pressure checks, and filter replacement. Mileage can also be improved by removing from the car little-used equipment that adds weight or increases drag (e.g., sporting gear, tools, roof racks/carriers). Driving habits are especially important: jackrabbit stops and starts eat up extra fuel, as does driving at higher speeds. All in all, the simple habit of engaging in planning and combining multiple trips into one excursion will likely save the average motorist far more money (and time) than all four of the above tips combined.

I have changed my driving habits considerably and my mileage has increased from an average of just under 27 to just over 31 mpg.

Here is what I do differently:

  • I drive the exact speed limit.
  • I put my car in neutral and coast up to stop lights and signs.
  • I coast in neutral on hills and inclines.
  • I look far ahead to traffic lights and adapt based on where I think it'll be when I approach.
  • I use my cruise control constantly.
  • I accelerate smoothly and evenly.
  • I try to stay off the brake as much as safely possible.

Turning off your engine removes access to power steering and power brakes.

I've switched at least half my gas purchases to Citgo on accounta I'd rather support the Venezuelan economy than I would support OPEC

I learned that the hard way. I rolled down someone's driveway which was a big hill and i couldn't understand why the breaks weren't breaking. Luckily, i didn't hit anything. It was scary as hell though.

LOL...some people might actually try it and find out what unassisted steering is all about. :103631605

While they are at it...ram that f'ker in Park. When the tranny drops off...you will have much less drag allowing for a longer coast down the hill.

I'm actually tired of driving into NYC apartment hunting for Huskygirl, so I tried to take the train the other day.

Took so long to find a parking space on a weekday, the train left the platform as we were running up the steps to catch it. Had to try anyways, lest we miss our appointment.

Sadly, I haven't done anything to conserve gas, too much stuff going on this summer with visitors and parties and chit. However, I do turn off the computers and printers at the office at night, never used to. The electric bill is fucking crazy.

Wasn't Harry & Nancy going to do something about this?

Only kidding, it's only political to the extent that we refuse to use our own shit. I blame both parties for doing nothing, and us for allowing them to do nothing.
