Oregon at Michigan State

Sixth-ranked Michigan State looks for some payback when it hosts No. 5 Oregon in a battle of national powers Saturday night. The Spartans lost a pair of contests last season -- a 46-27 decision at Oregon early on and another against Ohio State, which defeated the Ducks in the College Football Playoff National Championship game.

While Michigan State often relies on a unit that is the only one to finish in the top 10 in the nation four consecutive seasons in total and rushing defense, the Ducks put up 731 yards in a 61-42 victory over Eastern Washington last week. Senior transfer quarterback Vernon Adams Jr. registered 340 yards of total offense in his debut for Oregon, and the Spartans must also contain productive running back Royce Freeman. Michigan State quarterback Connor Cook threw for 343 yards against Oregon last season, but was intercepted twice as the Ducks scored the game’s final 28 points. “I think we’ll be very motivated for the game, as will they, because this is a stepping stone game,” Spartans coach Mark Dantonio told reporters. “. … It’s a big, national game, and I think we all understand that.”

TV: 8 p.m. ET, ABC. LINE: Michigan State -4

ABOUT OREGON (1-0): Adams, who took a late hit Saturday but proclaimed himself fine early in the week, threw for a pair of scores against his former team in the opener while Freeman rushed for a career-high 180 yards and three TDs. The Ducks must solve some issues on the other side of the ball to remain in the national title chase, after giving up 438 passing yards. “I think maybe in some ways, getting exposed the way we did is going to make us a lot better,” Oregon secondary coach John Neal told the Register-Guard.

ABOUT MICHIGAN STATE (1-0): Cook completed 15-of-31 passes for 256 yards and two TDs in the 37-24 victory over Western Michigan last week, and his top target was Aaron Burbridge (four catches, 117 yards). One of the keys for the Spartans is developing a rushing attack with several inexperienced options behind a solid offensive line and freshman LJ Scott had a team-high 77 of their 196 yards in the opener. Linebacker Riley Bullough led the way with a career-best nine tackles and three of Michigan State’s seven sacks last week.

EXTRA POINTS

1. Michigan State, which lost its top defensive backs to the NFL, gave up 365 yards through the air last week and only 18 on the ground.

2. Oregon WR Bralon Addison, who had 890 receiving yards in 2013 before missing 2014 with an injury, had three catches for 24 yards and a TD last Saturday.

3. Dantonio announced Spartans reserve S Mark Meyers was suspended indefinitely for an off-field incident that occurred over the weekend.

[h=1]Oklahoma at Tennessee[/h]The first major Big 12-SEC clash of the year takes place Saturday night in Tennessee, where the 23rd-ranked Volunteers host No. 17 Oklahoma. Both teams are looking to climb back toward the top of their respective leagues after a down year for the Sooners and several seasons of mediocrity for Tennessee, and the anticipation has caused some to lob early fireworks.

"I don't know why people blow gas up their (behind) all the time," Oklahoma linebacker Eric Striker said this week when asked about the SEC's reputation as the premier conference in the land. "I don't understand why." The Volunteers likely don't need any bulletin-board material as excitement builds around a team that produced its first win as a ranked squad since Jan. 1, 2008, with last Saturday's 59-30 rout of Bowling Green. Tennessee's touted ground attack produced 399 yards, presenting a formidable challenge for the Big 12's top returning rush defense, but one that allowed Akron to produce a respectable 138 on the ground in a 41-3 win to open the season. The Sooners limited the Volunteers to 313 total yards in a 34-10 win at home last season in just the third all-time meeting between the teams.

TV: 6 p.m. ET, ESPN. LINE: PK

ABOUT OKLAHOMA (1-0): Trevor Knight threw for 308 yards and a touchdown while running for another in last year's win over Tennessee, but he lost out on his starting job to Texas Tech transfer Baker Mayfield, who lit up Akron for 388 yards and three scores last week. It marked the team's first game under new offensive coordinator Lincoln Riley and his Air Raid attack, which figures to help a team that was run-heavy last season. The Sooners were held to three yards per carry against the Zips.

ABOUT TENNESSEE (1-0):
Jalen Hurd had 123 yards and three touchdowns while Alvin Kamara produced 144 and a pair of scores to lead the Volunteers' ground game last week. Quarterback Joshua Dobbs added 205 yards and two scores, and the return from suspension of senior wide receiver Alton Howard - who led the team in catches and receiving yards in 2014 - might help provide more balance. On the other side of the ball, another suspension for a violation of team rules has thrust defensive tackle Danny O'Brien from the mix for at least a week, coach Butch Jones announced on Wednesday.

EXTRA POINTS

1. Hurd had 97 yards on 14 carries last season at Oklahoma.

2. Sooners head coach Bob Stoops is 3-0 against the SEC in the regular season.

3. Oklahoma's lone visit to the Volunteer State was on Sept. 11, 1976, when it knocked off Vanderbilt 24-3.

[h=1]Louisiana State at Mississippi State[/h]

No. 15 LSU has revenge on its mind Saturday at Mississippi State as the Tigers take the field for their belated season opener. Last week's contest against McNeese State was canceled due to lingering lightning in the area, leaving LSU without a tuneup as it tries to get payback on a Bulldogs team that pulled off a 34-29 win in Baton Rouge a season ago.

Quarterback Dak Prescott accounted for three touchdowns in that matchup as Mississippi State won at LSU for the first time since 1991 and defeated the Tigers for the first time on any field since 1999. Mississippi State racked up 570 yards of offense - the most an LSU team coached by Les Miles has ever surrendered. The Tigers missed 19 tackles in that game and must be more firm this time around, particularly with Prescott coming off a strong performance in his season debut. The senior standout passed for 237 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 72 yards and a score last week in a 34-16 victory against Southern Mississippi.

TV: 9:15 p.m. ET, ESPN. LINE: LSU - 4.5

ABOUT LSU (2014: 8-5): Sophomore Brandon Harris was named the starting quarterback last week after beating out junior Anthony Jennings, who started 12 games a season ago, although neither enjoyed much success in 2014. While quarterback is not a particular strength for LSU, the team is set at running back after Leonard Fournette set a Tigers freshman rushing record with 1,034 yards a year ago. LSU's defense returns starting tackles Christian LaCouture and Davon Godchaux, middle linebacker Kendell Beckwith and safety Jamal Adams.

ABOUT MISSISSIPPI STATE (1-0): The Bulldogs led 14-10 at halftime in Week 1 before Prescott's 49-yard run early in the third quarter set the tone for a dominant second half. Tigers defensive lineman Tashawn Bower said of the 230-pound Prescott, who torched LSU a season ago: “I can’t imagine if he put on weight or (improved) his game speed this year." Speaking of improvement, junior defensive end A.J. Jefferson got his first career start against Southern Miss and posted a career-high seven tackles - including a fourth-down stop at the goal line - and also notched a pair of sacks.

EXTRA POINTS

1. Mississippi State has not defeated LSU in consecutive meetings since 1990 and 1991.

2. Prescott needs 22 completions to tie the school record (Wayne Madkin, 462).

3. LSU has won its last 12 season openers.

[h=1]Kentucky at South Carolina[/h]
Kentucky fans are hopeful for a breakthrough year in coach Mark Stoops’ third season in Lexington, and breaking their losing streak at South Carolina would be a good start. The Wildcats aim for their first road victory over the Gamecocks since 1999 when the SEC East rivals square off Saturday.

The Gamecocks have sour memories of their last meeting with the Wildcats – a 45-38 defeat that marked only their second loss in the past 15 meetings – but coach Steve Spurrier said his team isn’t dwelling on the defeat. “I’ve always believed last year’s game with whomever you played is history,” Spurrier told reporters. “Every game stands on its own merit. We got beat last year. We got beat several times last year in a similar way, and we are trying to prevent it from happening this year.” Both teams needed late rallies to win their openers, as South Carolina held on for a 17-13 win over North Carolina in Charlotte, N.C., and Kentucky eked out a 40-33 victory over visiting Louisiana. For all their success under Spurrier, the Gamecocks haven’t started 2-0 since 2012, while the Wildcats are aiming for their second straight 2-0 start.
TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, SEC Network. LINE: South Carolina -7.5.

ABOUT KENTUCKY (1-0): The Wildcats gave up 247 yards on the ground last week and will have to be much better up front against a Gamecocks offense that leans on its veteran running backs. The difficulty stopping the Ragin’ Cajuns dampened the enthusiasm for a strong offensive performance in which Patrick Towles passed for 257 yards and three touchdowns and Boom Williams rushed for 135 yards and a score. The Wildcats figure to be pass-happy under new offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson, but they might want to lean on the run against a South Carolina defense that had a tough time stopping the ground game last week.
ABOUT SOUTH CAROLINA (1-0): The Gamecocks were mostly lackluster against North Carolina, but Shon Carson’s 48-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter and Skai Moore’s two interceptions in the end zone were enough to salvage a victory. The two red-zone stops mitigated the fact South Carolina allowed 440 yards of total offense, including a whopping 208 on the ground. Carson’s long run also bailed out the offense, which needs to be better in the passing game after Connor Mitch finished 9-for-22 for 122 yards and a touchdown last week.

EXTRA POINTS
1. Spurrier is 20-2 against Kentucky, which is tied for his best mark against any school (Vanderbilt). No current FBS coach has 21 wins against any opponent.
2. Kentucky has not won its SEC opener since beating Arkansas in 2007.
3. South Carolina K Elliott Fry has made a school-record 101 consecutive PATs.
