Call Dell, get all hardware detachable. Dont go for the modem, sound card, video attached to motherboard crap. Pay about $800 and you are set. Great CS/support too. 3-4 days on your porch. Plug in and look at all the porn you like.

go to ebay and bid on the cheapest 512 DDR system and you can do that easily. Computers exceed web surfing by far these days. If you want your porn to look good get a video card with your sustem

I would make sure you get a Pentium 4 and at least 256 RAM

If you are looking to replace your CPU only (no monitor) 800 is a ton to spend.

You require pretty basic stuff that almost any computer will do and do quickly. You should ask yourself, how much do you want to spend? and how long do you want to keep it?

I've been pretty happy with Dell and just purchased my second Dell 3-4 months ago.

If your budget is 800 bucks or so for just the PC, like EVERYTHING fast, do not anticipate playing games, anticipate that you will continue to use the PC in the same way (email, bets, porn, surfing, etc.), and want it to last 3 years or so without feeling the need to upgrade... then get a 2ghz+ Pentium 4 with 256 ram and you will be very pleased. Skip the extended warranties, skip the DVD writer (do get a CD burner), skip the advanced graphics cards and such.

The PC described briefly above will give you room to expand if necessary while giving you current technology which will be good for the future. It is WAY more than you need today though (for example you do not need a 2 ghz p4 to surf and send email). If budgetary concerns are an issue then you need to post how much you have to spend and whether or not you need a monitor and I'm sure the geeks will come out and design a pretty sweet machine for you.

I build computers to pay for my college tuition and can offer you a NEW computer with :

-AMD Athlon XP 2200+ processor (runs like a Pentium 2.2ghz)
-256 DDR RAM
-40GB hard drive
-CD & CD Burner
-Ethernet and fax modem
-Windows XP Professional Installed
-Microsoft Office XP Professional Installed
-standard extras (USB, sound...)

All of the parts I use are NEW and well known brands.

If you want faster/bigger components or smaller/slower components let me know I can adjust price accordingly. Price for above configuration is $499. If you or anyone else here is interested post here and I will give further information. We can transact through ebay if that would make anyone feel more comfortable. I have plenty of good feedback.

JMan-

Seem like you have a few $$ invested in your little puppy. Follow Dante's advice and get it fixed, if possible for less than a few hundred bucks. Depending on how you paid for the PC/Motherboard it may still be under a manufacturer's warranty or credit card extended warranty.

Marcellus-

I've heard the same about Alienware. Why is Alienware the "best" on the market? Why are they so good? With Dell and Apple you can identify reasons why they could be considered the "best."

Just do what we do for our office. Just go to best buy and buy the computer with monitor and printer for only $400 after rebates. It doesnt have as much memory as some, but we dont keep the computers longer than 3-5 years anyway.

95% of America end up buying a computer that is WAYYYYY to hi tech for them. They will NEVER use even 10% of the memory, but they end up paying $1200 more than they need to.

That $400 computer package from best buy, or actually make it $500 and get the burner, is the PERFECT computer for 90% of all computer users!

Monitors and PC's do have half-lives you know! No reason to spend alot on a computer when you can just buy a better one in 4 years.

OH yes, AND do not buy the extended warraty. People who buy are the same type of people who bet 10 team parlays everyday. Sure they may hit the parlay one time in their lifetime, but it isnt a good idea.

Neither is an extended warranty. Remember this when they try and sell you a $300 warranty, you can buy a brand new PC, MONITOR and PRINTER for only $500 including tax!
