So my parents, their parents and their parents and so on were christian. I am too. Or at least I was until today. I was talking to an atheist...I know I know...

He asked me, did I ever stop to think that the whole religion of christianity (well many religions but we're talking about christianity since that's relevant here) is based on fear.

I mean, it basically states, believe in and worship me or go to hell. I mean what in the hell?

Okay, so, if christianity was so great or god so great, why would he need to scares us into believing in him or worshipping him?

I mean it dawned on me. Ever since I was a kid, in Sunday school or at home, all I remember is conversations and pictures on booklets of hell fires and other scary things, basically scaring me into being a christian. Spending eternity in hell etc with pics to make it seem real or scary in your little brain.

Christianity in a way is a very devlish, evil but genius ploy. I mean it preys on humans' worst fears-death. If you die you either go to hell or heaven, believe in our god and you go to heaven. It's sick.

I can write 2 pages on what's wrong with christianity but my point is, they say finding god will set you free but today I feel more free than ever having recognized this sham of a religion and in fact all religions for what it is...pure bull.

I'm tired of being controlled and brainwashed.

Today I literally looked at the sky and gave the so called jesus the middle finger.

I'm done folks. I'm free now. Now that I am, people who are religious and talk of god, especially christians, well it just makes my skin crawl, it's almost as if it's looking at a creepy robot or possessed person.

Well, I can't wait till this Sunday when I tell the family we aren't going to church. It's a load off.

Jimmy,

I'm saddened that you had this bad experience, but take a step back and think logically and rationally before taking drastic measures.

The Bible speaks very little about hell, and I would argue (as many theologians throughout time have) that hell is not a place of endless torment according to the Bible.

Hell didn't even exist as a word in Jesus' time. He used the word Gehenna which is a literal place outside Jerusalem (city dump). The wages of sin is death
according to Romans, not endless torment.

Bottom line, don't let a bad experience with some ill-informed people cloud your thinking of what is true. We didn't get here on earth from nothing, which evolved into rocks,
which evolved into swamp goo, which evolved into humans. There is a God out there. Find a church that you like.

I've been known to do this after a pick6, a missed free throw, or a walkoff homerun.

Sorry to make light. It's really scary to feel that one day you'll die and there's nothing after this. It's much easier for those who believe there is something after. The original One-G0D religion, the Jews did not have the concept of Hell. Hell was added by the Christians. The Jews did have Sin though, lots of it. However sinning does not send you to hell but keeps you out of the Kingdom of Heaven. That is, unless you atone for your sins. That is what Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement) is about. When you atone for your sins you also pray for G0d's forgiveness. That G0d will wash away your sins and inscribe you in the Book Of (Eternal) Life. Sure hope my Dad is playing poker up there. He better be having fun before my Mom shows up. Crap, now I have to go to synagogue for writing that! Good Luck Jimmy!

Which begs the question…

Jimmy,

I'm saddened that you had this bad experience, but take a step back and think logically and rationally before taking drastic measures.

The Bible speaks very little about hell, and I would argue (as many theologians throughout time have) that hell is not a place of endless torment according to the Bible.

I understand what you are saying but I'm too turned off. Turned off might be a frivolous term to use but turned off is what I feel. I'm looking back at all my experiences and it's hit me like a ton of bricks. The greed associated with religion and churches. The fear of consequences, whether it's a flaming hell or whatever it may be. The religion is always using fear to make you love God. How can anybody make you love something? But that's what my whole childhood has been about. Go to church, pray, believe in God, do this do that or you're not going to heaven.

I look at every single religion in the world and the whole basis for their religion is absurd historically speaking. I'm thinking now it's more likely jesus was a schizophrenic or on drugs, who went into the desert, had a trip/episode and came back claiming all sorts of wild things. Moses too.

Then there's the problem with religion being used to sexually abuse so many kids. Think of all the kids that would have been spared molestation at the hands of these sick homo freaks that only get access to the kids because they are in a position of trust related to christianity. I had a fight with the wife the over day because I put my foot down that when my kids will never attend Sunday school or any other kind of church activity where they will be left alone with anybody. That's how bad and rampant it is. I personally know of a father, a friend of mine that is pressing charges against somebody at a church over child abuse.

I'm sorry for my nonsensical ranting. I'm in a a troubled spot in my life. I've made a huge change in my life and although I'm sure it's the educated and correct decision, it's still very disturbing that I now realize there is no God, at least not the one I worshipped, and now, more than ever I'm scared of death and having nothing after that. But I do know I will never be religious again unless I see it, see anything with my own eyes. If God is so powerful, why does he not come forth and reveal himself? Sounds simplisitic but it really should be that simple.

Somebody in this thread said it. Man created God just like he created the idea of ghosts, spirits, heaven and hell and so on. I think the only reason the idea of religions keeps surviving is there is way too much money to be made in it, power to be had and kids to be taken advantage of.

I'm sorry sir, but I read the papers, I know my history, I look around, christianity and other religions have done way more harm then good. That's my bottom line.

As for my kids, I have stopped taking them to church. My wife now attends alone. It's caused somewhat a rift between us but I maintain my stance.

I don't know why I chose to spill my guts online but I guess I had a lot pent up. I apologize if I offended people.

Oh and by the way that’s the one mystery that no one alive will ever know and I can’t say I’m looking forward to finding out.

I'm very proud of how many Australians are joining the ''I'll ride with you'' rally with Muslims. Great to see. I've always been told that Australia is one of the most racist countries in the world but now I'm not so sure.

I've been noticing more and more support for Muslims around my State also.

So I'll get to the point. My white coworker who was over at my place today asked me today, ''why don't Muslims stand up and speak out against terrorism?''

Here's what I told him, do you speak out when say a white person shoots up a school? Do you justify yourself to people and act apologetic?

Now those people don't represent a religion but neither do the terrorists. They are just terrorists/extremists that use religion as a way to recruit people. It's easier that way.

I said we Muslims, or even Italians, Philipinos, Chinese, etc aren't guests in this country. We are proud Americans. We will not be apologetic, or go out of our way to explain ourselves.

America has a history of turning on people. The Irish, Italians, Japanese, Blacks and now Muslims and to a lesser extent, Jews. It's a shameful part of our history but no country is perfect.

Happy Holidays and GOD BLESS AMERICA.

p.s

No I don't want stupid Sharia Law and I will not get offended if told Merry Christmas.

Modern Christianity (the bedrock values and institutions of church, traditional marriage, common sense of the ten commandments etc.) built Western civilization.

Nature abhors a vacuum and a post-Christian America (Islam and nihilism) is truly frightening.

The latest "transgender bathroom wars" is a perfect example of how a once sane, prosperous society is rapidly in decline.

It's a very small group of radical activists, academics and lawyers doing everything in their power to humiliate and demoralize the normal majority.

Most people don't want a fight so the lunatic fringe keeps winning.

The religion of "global warming" is another example.

I'm completely lost now about the other posts. Must be inside jokes I clearly don't comprehend.

I'll address this post though. They may have built western civilization but that's all long gone now. It's outdated.

I think both Liberals and Conservatives are ruining this country actually. Both are going to have to fix it by meeting in the middle.

I bet you are.

So yesterday you had a life altering change of heart about your religion then decided to share that huge life decision with a group of strangers in the political section of a gambling forum that you had never before posted in? Sounds reasonable.

I must say "Today I literally looked at the sky and gave the so called jesus the middle finger" made me laugh. It's as if a 12 year old is posting.

Speaking of 12 year olds...Shaking my head. I don't get involved with trolls in childish/ridiculous arguments. Not taking the bait. Have a nice day.
