My apologies for not starting this sooner. I've been out of the weather loop the past few guys worried about roommates moving in, etc. But as many of you know, Hurricane Katrina made landfall yesterday in south Florida and is taking a path that is eeriely similar to that of Hurricane Andrew in the early 90s (except that Andrew started off in Africa, Katrina began already in the islands.
I haven't been down to the NWS (National Weather Service) yet, but I am headed to campus within an hour or so and should come back with some better information. For now it appears as though damage was minimal by hurricane standards in South Florida, as there was extensive tree damage, but no significant structural damage in the area. 4 deaths have been reported.
The path of this hurricane at this point is awfully questionable. It seems as though a turn towards the north has already begun with Katrina, and this simply seems to be a matter of how sharp this right hand turn is going to be. Though the projected cone of this storm is currently just basically the panhandle of Florida, the entire gulf coast from about Tampa to I'd venture to say the New Orleans area should be keeping a close eye on this. Landfall right now is expected at some point late Sunday or early Monday (just in time for the first day of school... lucky us), but these storms have tendancies of doing just about anything in terms of speed once they begin their turn north (including the possibility of the storm literally stopping off the Gulf Coast).
I'll do my best to keep you all updated. Stay safe.... I know I'm doing my best here in Tallahassee. We're still hurricane ready for Dennis, with the exception being that we don't nearly have enough alcohol to get through a power outage.
