My apologies for not starting this sooner. I've been out of the weather loop the past few guys worried about roommates moving in, etc. But as many of you know, Hurricane Katrina made landfall yesterday in south Florida and is taking a path that is eeriely similar to that of Hurricane Andrew in the early 90s (except that Andrew started off in Africa, Katrina began already in the islands.

I haven't been down to the NWS (National Weather Service) yet, but I am headed to campus within an hour or so and should come back with some better information. For now it appears as though damage was minimal by hurricane standards in South Florida, as there was extensive tree damage, but no significant structural damage in the area. 4 deaths have been reported.

The path of this hurricane at this point is awfully questionable. It seems as though a turn towards the north has already begun with Katrina, and this simply seems to be a matter of how sharp this right hand turn is going to be. Though the projected cone of this storm is currently just basically the panhandle of Florida, the entire gulf coast from about Tampa to I'd venture to say the New Orleans area should be keeping a close eye on this. Landfall right now is expected at some point late Sunday or early Monday (just in time for the first day of school... lucky us), but these storms have tendancies of doing just about anything in terms of speed once they begin their turn north (including the possibility of the storm literally stopping off the Gulf Coast).

I'll do my best to keep you all updated. Stay safe.... I know I'm doing my best here in Tallahassee. We're still hurricane ready for Dennis, with the exception being that we don't nearly have enough alcohol to get through a power outage.

That might cause phone call problems while trying to wager since the Cane will interfere with the satelite conections.

Here I was all set to post Katrina's new info, but the Weather Channel has already done it for us. As you can see, the cone of doom has moved west back to the same general area where Dennis made landfall. Everyone in the NWS up here is awfully reluctant to say that this cone is accurate, as just in the last 8-10 hours or so, the cone has shifted itself from the middle of it being in the Florida panhandle to almost none of it being in there. That being said, even if you're in Texas around the LA border, keep your eyes open for this one. It'll swing north at some point, but exactly when and how sharp are still to be determined. Fortunately I have an 8 hour shift starting at 11:00 PM that will give me plenty of time to look up weather reports throughout the night, so we should know more tomorrow morning for certain.

Now looking like a Monday morning direct hit on New Orleans. Manadatory evacuations have begun, with orders for metro NO expected later today or Sunday morning.

Just got my power back on in Hollywood after 2 fucking days with no power. My house is still hot as shit. Got my fingers crossed for New Orleans, it will be wiped off the map if it takes a direct hit.

This may do worse damage than any one single hurricane last year.

some small talk in the weather biz that this could get to a cat 5 storm. This would be catastrophic as New Orleans is below sea level. My prayers are with all in its path. apple :sad3:

I'm in Louisiana. It was a mad-house today at the local Wal-Mart down the street.

Interstates are starting to get jammed up. I expect I will be losing power come Sunday night or Monday morning.

I have a condo down in Venice, LA. (great fishing) and don't know what to expect.

Where I live, from what I have seen on the local TV, we can expect winds up to 90 mph, but the main damage will be caused by the heavy rain and flooding.

We'll see what happens.

Heard on Sirius that many in New Orleans are having parties. Local interviews showed no inclination to relocate. Worst case the city will be under 18-25 feet of water. Hope it turns to a less urban area. Cross your fingers and pray if you are so inclined.

I'm in baton rouge and man it seems our population doubled over night..and whats worse we could be just a few hours away from being told to get the hell out of here!! this could be a big one but hey...it helps clean out the place to get 1 of these every few years.....bad thing is the chinese owned power company layed off all but a skeleton crew years ago so if we lose power it could take weeks to get it back in some cases.....naturally the tv has everyone in a full out panic so you cant find a battery or a candle for miles...walmarts are stuffed with people, a lot of em just in there cus they got nowhere to go and they open 24 hrs....
they are getting better at predicting the path of these things but i still think at this point this thing could go anywhere.....ill be signing off tonight i imagine....if the lights do go off for any length of time i guess ill evacuate to the poker tables over in lake charles....anybody in the area can bring me a wireless laptop id appreciate it...ill be at the 3/6 holdem tables more than likely... not sure i got enough cash on me to last 2-3 days at no-limit!!

Hey Santo

This storm will get stronger before it weakens. 908mb and falling. Forward speed is increasing so this will effect people living 150 miles inland with very strong winds

Cat 5

I don't wish this hurricane on anyone but really hope it doesn't make direct landfall on New Orleans. That could be diastrous.
