West Rochester NY

State police say it was no typical office pool, but a major gambling ring.

Police raided locations in Monroe County Sunday, looking for evidence. They seized $38,000, gambling records and computers.

In the last five months, police estimate the operation took in $2 million worth of bets on college and professional basketball and football, as well as professional hockey.

"This was an operation for profit. This was a criminal enterprise," said Lt. William Saunders. "They were accepting bets and they were making a profit on this and that's illegal. If anybody's going to engage in that, whether it's the Super Bowl or any other time of the year, they can expect to be arrested."

The case is going to a grand jury.

Another sad day when they go after the books. 9 out of 10 times in these cases, you are talking about cops who were betting finally deciding to bust so they don't have to pay.

Agree with Wilheim, even if upstate & not NYC, what kind of self-respecting shop has a mere 38K around, were they expecting to be robbed or pinched, that is pizza-delivery change for most shops up there.

Someone up there keep an eye out for Johnny Law's boys buying fishing rigs soon.

(I think)

Hopefully he wasn't involved (or at least not caught).

2 mil? I know locals who have that handle every 3 weeks. Hope Tekari wasn't part of it.

Wouldn't you think that cops have better things to concentrate on? How many murders were there in Roch this weekend?

That is less then $100,000 a week in bets during prime football season. "huge" is a bit of an over-statement. 10 guys betting a $1000 a night is considered huge?
