Diamonds are one of the biggest ripoffs going. They make them out to be rare when in fact they're not.

The markup on them is ridiculous. It's almost like buying them from the mob. Unfortunately, that isn't going to help you as your fiancee will need one.

I would rather save some of that money for a house or something than spending way too much money for a ring.

..or your honeymoon for that matter.

I'd say 5k-10k max. 20k is out of the question.

most pawn shops will have some nice stones... buy your stone and have it put in a simple setting. propose to her with that ring and then have her go pick out her 'wedding' setting at a higher end shop.

I bought a ring earlier this year. Spent $10,000 (I had it later appraised at about $16,000)

First off, biggest waste of money (besides cookware!). But it is for the girl so I think you should sleuth it up to see what kind of diamond she wants. Of course they want colorless and flawless and big, but see what kind of shape she wants (round, emerald, princess, heart, etc.).

Settings are tough as well, if she is particular, you may want to get a simple one and have her design it later. If you have good taste, go for it.

If you are only making 100K a year, 20K is too much money for a ring (hell that is too much money for a ring no matter how much you make).

10K you can get a fantastic ring, economy is bad, jew-em down too.

I got my wife a beautiful 1.2 Qarat diamond for about 4K.

Every time she shows it to someone they are in awww.

why so cheap? the clarity is fine, the diamond is brilliant, but if you look at it with a microscope there is a flaw in the middle.

Thing is NOBODY, I MEAN NOBODY, ever sees the flaw.

Trust me, if you have the choice between a huge rock with a FLAW or a perfect diamond much smaller with no FLAW... the women will enjoy the BIG ROCK much more.

My wife knows about the FLAW but she could care less, as nobody knows about it except for her and I, in the meantime she flashes her huge rock everywhere and I look like a High Roller.

Cost was about 4 or 5K from a wholesaler and appraises for about 12K or so.

10k is plenty unless you make more than $200k. DO NOT buy it from a mall jeweler, you will pay 2x what you would pay at a jewelry mart or in the jewelry district. Educate yourself, learn as much as you can online, then go to the mall and waste an hour of time of a sales person asking questions and having them show you stones so you can see the difference, make sure you look at them in the higher resolution glass (they usually have a big one where you sit in front of it and look at the stone behind the cases, not just the little loop). Then, once you have done that, figure out an intro through a friend or co-worker to a wholesale jeweler and pay cash (as in hundred dollar bills). They are all shady as hell and want cash, should get it sales tax free and a better price. Make it known when you ask for the price that you are paying cash.

Don't spend a lot on the setting unless you absolutely know what she wants. Most jewelers will set it in a cheap setting and then reset it for you after you give it to her.

I'm no expert on diamonds, but if only an expert can really tell a 20k ring from a 2k one, why bother ?

If you need an expert to look at it under a microscope to tell, then whats the diff ?

Celebs with expensive stones have replicas made, and store the real thing in safe deposit boxes, wear the fakes.

Terrible resale as well.

Buy a ring for 20k ( or just the stone), then take it to another jeweler... what do you think they will offer ?
