If marriage is defined by god, how come no outrage from religious people over states handing out marriage licenses period. Shouldn't that be done by a priest?
The definition of marriage is a bit different than getting a piece of paper handed to you by a state official. They are two different things.
No, the administrators that give the licenses are following the law voted on by the voters in the state.
Not really, the SCOTUS decided this, not the voters of the state. Either way you look it at, the state licenses the marriage, either through the people or the courts. God isn't the one making the decision here. I've always thought it would be a good idea for civil union contracts protected by the state, and that marriage should be left to the individual or Religion of his/her choice. Call it what ever you want.
Given that tens of thousands of gay couples have been getting legally married in various North American locations for almost a full decade, this ruling by the SCOTUS simply clarifies the rights of all such Americans to enjoy all the legal and - very important - tax/insurance benefits which heterosexual couples have always had
All in all, the ruling will have virtually zero effect on the lives of those Americans (90%+) who themselves will never marry someone of the same gender
