Especially when the oil companies enjoy windfall record profits year after year - and where are the congressional hearings into this?

Now that the Democrats are in charge, you'd think they'd be raising a ruckus about the growing gas prices - but not a whisper - one has to wonder why$$.

What sort of hearings would you like? Hearings to repeal the tax breaks given over the last few years?

Or are you just bitching because you're on the wrong end of capitalism in this instance?

The Federal Government needs to tell them there States to lower those prices or you won't be able to sell that gas. This will lower the prices by a buck or so. This is what I think should be the solution to this here problem for now.

Capitalism is one thing - price fixing and price gouging is another.

One must wonder if high prices and windfall profits go hand in hand.

KT, won't matter to me, but would just like to see oil, pay their share. Prices aren't gonna drop in CR either way.

There have been plenty of investigations in the last several decades in regards to this matter. The problem is you have government agencies doing the investigating. Now, price controls don't work, never have, never will. Just ask Jimmy Carter. Gas is supply and demand in theory. Low supplies equals higher prices. Plenty of gas should equal lower prices. The problem is that as long as government is involved there will always be corruption in some form.

Funny thing though. People complain about $3 for a gallon of gas but will pay $8 for a gallon of bottled water. Corner store charges .99 for a pint of Ozarka, 8 pints in a gallon. Are there investigations into the bottled water companies?

Hell, I'm more pissed about my $400 electric bill every month during the summer.

That's because people still have the alternative to go to their kitchen sink and drink that water.

You're kind of locked in with the gas companies and fuel prices effect everything in this country.

Can't people ride a bike to work? Take the subway? That's impossible where I live though. Like I said, I hate paying $400 a month for electricity.

As a country, we really have to conserve instead of giving these assholes in the Middle East more money. I don't see why the government doesn't give more incentive to big businesses to do so. Why not give companies tax breaks who allow their employees to stay work at home one day out of the week?? It'll save each employee money over the year in transportation costs and maybe ease traffic a little bit.

Was 100% manipulated. It has been documented and proven how.

1) Goldman Sachs, who has a loooong history of working with the gov't and whom many of current administration formerly worked, control the largest commodity index in the world. Back in August 06 they drastically reduced the weighting of unleaded gasoline futures in their index, causing a sharp selloff in gas. Why? - no comment from GS.

2) The crack spread, which is the difference between what it cost refiners to produce gasoline and what they sell it for, was also reduced to zero....exactly one week after G. Sachs did their thing. They were selling gas for zero proifit. An unpresedented move.
