House OKs $819B stimulus bill in win for Obama

By LIZ SIDOTI, Associated Press Writer – 18 mins ago

WASHINGTON – In a swift victory for President Barack Obama, the Democratic-controlled House approved a historically huge $819 billion stimulus bill Wednesday night with spending increases and tax cuts at the heart of the young administration's plan to revive a badly ailing economy. The vote was 244-188, with Republicans unanimous in opposition despite Obama's frequent pleas for bipartisan support.

"This recovery plan will save or create more than three million new jobs over the next few years," the president said in a written statement released moments after the House voted. Still later, he welcomed congressional leaders of both parties to the White House for drinks as he continued to lobby for the legislation.

Earlier, Obama declared, "We don't have a moment to spare" as congressional allies hastened to do his bidding in the face of the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression.

The vote sent the bill to the Senate, where debate could begin as early as Monday on a companion measure already taking shape. Democratic leaders have pledged to have legislation ready for Obama's signature by mid-February.

they'll have to pass something else for more billions to fund their "bad bank" setup that is coming from our tax evading treasury sec probably by monday

the 700 bil of tarp won't be enough

fun times

the onus on the dems now (since they are choosing spending over tax cuts) and like the japanese and during the FDR days we are gonna find out the hard way that "stimulus" don't work and in some ways can make things worse...

only pain and time can do the job....what government tends to do is drag out the pain....rather than let the markets correct and get it over with....

dems cut out most of the tax cuts

GOP wanted it to mainly be slashing taxes (and not cutting spending the bush motto)

DEMs wanted it to mainly be government spending

reason every GOP voted against it

both want to increase our debt burden either way though

thing is 600 pages long....wonder how many of our representatives even read it....

also don't expect your overall tax burden to go down even though federal government might give you a rebate or something of that nature

cali regardless if they go bankrupt or not likely will be sending out IOUs for tax refunds :nohead:

local municipalites and states finances are an utter mess and will be jacking up taxes and they are very sly and find ways to institute many "hidden taxes"

some examples

one guy i was talking to a few days ago just got back from NYC and he said they got these guys riding around in motorbikes pulling over people for talking on the cell phone in their car (120 bucks)

chicago camera's for running red lights or not making a complete stop (rolling stop) on right hand turns they send you a photo as well as a handy little dvd so you can watch yourself and slap you with a 200 dollar fine

in my neck of the woods they just put in this "snow emergency" in which you can only park on a certain side of the street during certain days when we get quite a bit of snow if you are signed up for the email warning or what not they send it out like half a day before it goes into affect so one if you don't check your email that day or two if you don't know about since its not well publicized they tow your car if you are on the wrong side of the street and you get the great pleasure of paying the towing fee, storage fee, finding a ride to get your car....etc....

government has a way of getting a big chunk of your money one way or the other :hump:

& I hope it fails in the Senate

From the Desk of:
Steve Elliott, President, Grassfire.org Alliance

Vote today on bogus stimulus. And it's getting
worse by the hour. See below. --Steve

The House is expected to vote TODAY (Wednesday) on the Obama Stimulus
bill,
which is getting worse and worse -- and bigger and bigger -- by
the hour. Here's just a sampling of what is in the bill:

$2.4 billion carbon capture products...

$4.19 billion for ACORN and other bogus "community organizing" groups...

$650 million digital tv conversion...

$79 billion to bail out the state education system...

Hundreds of millions for family planning...

$400 million global warming research...

$50 million for the National Endowment for the Arts...

$200 million to refurbish the National Mall...

And the bill is not even a stimulus! Just 1% of the so-called stimulus
is for tax cuts for small businesses. And according to the Congressional
Budget Office, two thirds of the stimulus will not even be spent for
nearly two years!

, it is as if Obama and the Democrats expected conservatives
to just roll over and accept anything they rammed down our throats.

Well, I will not roll over!

+ + Action Item -- Contact Congress now.

Again, I am asking every member of the Patriotic Resistance to contact
Congress right now and say "no" to the Obama socialistic stimulus plan.

Two ways to take action:

Sen. Brown 202-224-2315

Rep. Kaptur 202-225-4146

Rep. Mike Pence calls the bill a "dusty old wish list of liberal spending
priorities."
The House is voting TODAY...the Senate before the end of the week.

Thank you for taking action!

A stimulus package to jump start the economy, is that an example of change or hope?

Of course, I wish Obama nothing but success, but I'm not man enough to ignore the Hope and Change er um ah geez "crowd". That's it, the Hope and Change crowd. Is that an acceptable description? I'm trying to be a kinda and gentler person, in the spirit of hope don't ya know.

senate gonna pass its own similar version next week

and have it on obama's desk in a few weeks

Maine's Senator Olympia Snow (I think that's her name) has already signaled her support of the bill in the Senate...which should help in the Senate.

It should get by in the Senate but they will alter it a bit. Then back to the House where (hopefully) enough changes have occured to have some bi partisan support.

Zero republicans backing it yesterday was a dog and pony show since they know it's going to come back to them. They think it may give the Senate R's some more bargaining power when it gets to the Senate.
