If you asked this question Back in the 80's & 90's, I could say that I have Witness some people make a Ton on Horse Gambling.
I myself was known to make a Very nice Buck on horse Racing...Back in the Day !
But in the Mid 2000's ( around 2006 ) things were not always the same.
New Trainers & Drivers came in, the "Boys" were already out of the picture
The new Drivers ( Kids ) had no fear....and really didn't care when they were told. Because they wanted to make a name for them selfs.
But back in the day, some Guys could make $50K+ a week betting Horses
Of course this was by Handicapping, but with Information !
You also have to remember, You didn't Need $50K to Make $50K in horse betting.
With Sports..( in Most cases ) You Do.
AAAHHHH, the Good Old Days ! are just about Gone.....

lived 5 years of my life traveling round the world... just from hangin out in a bar near belmont race track and gettin info from 'exercise jockey's'....think u need info from an owner...trainer or jockey himself....forget that noise..these were the riders who rode the horses day in and day out..they knew ever little thing there was to know...most of these "donkey's"....which is what we called these lil irish hard-on's... bought them enuff drinx....and they gave info on everything....like 'bet all' said you could make allot with a little...this was back in the mid-late 90's....was in my late 20's and never made so much scratch as easy as that ever again....it pays to be nice to people in the know...
an addendum on my story....all those guys i spoke of are long gone...i know something went down and a bunch of these guys wound up getting deported....now that i am a full time musician and still travelling the world i just play the ponies fer recreation now...i find it relaxing believe it or not,,,the handicapping part that is...
Sports betting > horses and it's not even close. The huge take outs at the track make making a long term profit difficult if not impossible. Yes, there are guys who can do it, but there are thousands who can't. If you have the talent and brains to be a successful horse handicapper, you can just as easily be a brain surgeon or a rocket scientist.
I do refer to Uk horses which is more competitive than US horses which is typically higher take out etc but horses is way easier to win than sports and here is my reasoning.
Sports there maybe 30 games in the day for example, information is pretty much all out there and errors by the odds makers are rare and going to be small.
In horses there may be 50 races in a day and 10 runners in each race - thats 500 horses to set a price for - fixed odds admittedly. Now the chances of big errors is high and even if the take out is high the errors could be huge and often are to those who are able to spot them.
A friend of mine and I studied together at Uni (bet most days) and his main interest was sports and mine horses. I would not say I was any more intelligent than him but he makes on average 1.2% profit per his stake ie $1.20 profit for each $100 bet whereas mine would be $15.50 per $100 bet. Yes, he can generate far greater turnover than me but the edge is much smaller in sports.
Horses admitedly is a killer if you don't know what you're doing. A bad horse race bettor would lose more than a bad sports player for sure.

thanks. I just feel that in horses,there are so many races,trainers,tracks. Unless,some have said you are an insider and get priority info. Did the horse have a good practice run,take a big dump,etc.... I thinking winning in sports is easier. IMO. But just understand I have no experience with horse racing
In my opinion if you dont have some kind of inside information when it comes to horses its a very hard game to beat. Look at it this way in most races there are around 7 horses that are going to race. In a game there is only two sides and two totals. If you bet a side or a total you have a 50/50 chance. In horses anyone of those 7 or more horses can win on any given day. Same as in sports but there is only two sides to pick from.
This notion that you need inside information makes me laugh. Everyone who loses at horses seems to feel this way.
Whilst it would help if you did get "inside" info it really depends who and how knowledged the person it comes from. Horse racing is built on rumours and so called inside info, the majority of which will lose you money. Even many trainers are so clueless regarding their own horses that having info from these guys is going to lose you money. Further, inside information is so overrated as it reflects in the odds.
Most pros on horse racing just have better ways to analyse the form than joe public and any "inside" information they are better able to deferentiate between the "worth listening to and bearing in mind" and the "BS".

Over last 11 years my profit to stake has been 15.53% ie $15.53 profit for every $100 bet and my friends is closer to $18 per $100 bet. Sports bettors wet themselves if they can make $2 per $100 bet.

Overall this is true but in select instances where I know or expect who has been "pre-raced" that is valuable information.Over the years when my trainer has told me to " go to the window" the horses were all easy winners.This has happened on less than 5 total occasions though.
For me personally it's easily racing> sports.
I've completely changed the way I handicap 3 times during my wagering lifetime and right now I'm very happy with my approach but I always strive to improve and learn from my mistakes.
When I lose a race I don't blame a jockey or lack of inside information, I go back and see what I missed.
Expecting to win just betting with a RacingForm is like bringing a knife to a gunfight.
