At the Gate - Wednesday
By Mike Dempsey
I sure hope none of you guys had 5 out of 6 in Sunday’s Pick 6 at Del Mar, which was closing day with a mandatory payout.
Despite the fact there was a consolation payoff for 5 out of 6 during the meeting, horseplayers were surprised to find out that on closing day there was only a 6 for 6 payout.
Once Twitter blew up on Sunday by horseplayers wondering why there was no consolation payout, Del Mar released a statement that read:
“Due to confusion surrounding Del Mar’s closing day Pick Six pool payouts, based on the Association of Racing Commissioners International (ARCI) Rule 004-105G (“Pick N Pools”), Del Mar Thoroughbred Club asks that customers hang on to their Pick Six tickets until Del Mar, AmTote and the California Horse Racing Board are able to clarify all circumstances surrounding the full distribution of the pool and the payouts.”
Monday afternoon they released this statement:
Beginning with its 2016 fall meeting, Del Mar instituted an enhanced Pick Six that included a Single Ticket Jackpot pool bonus for a unique (i.e., single) winning ticket.
Del Mar applied for the modification to its Pick Six under the Association of Racing Commissioners International (ARCI) rule 004-105G (“Pick n Pools”). Under that rule, there is a provision which designates payouts during a mandatory distribution date (in this case closing day). Under the ARCI rule, if there is not a unique ticket on a mandatory distribution day, the entire pool, including any carryover that might exist, shall be paid out to those who have selected the first-place finishers in the greatest number of races. Based upon the rule, since there were 44 tickets with six of six winners, there was no consolation payout in these circumstances.
While Del Mar Thoroughbred Club and its tote provider, AmTote, were following the ARCI rule, we regret any confusion surrounding the payout of the Pick Six pool on the mandatory distribution day and how the ARCI rule may have impacted our customers.
Let me translate for you: They make up the rules as they go along and horseplayers get screwed.
With the very questionable steward’s calls including the Jimmy Durante Stakes where debris on the turf course affected the running of the race but they decided not to declare it a no contest (they would have had to refund all wagers), it is getting very difficult for me to wager any money on California racing.
It is an incredibly frustrating industry run mostly by imbeciles that really have no idea that if it was not for horseplayers, there would be no industry.
Here is the opening race from Gulfstream Park to get the day off to a good start:
GP Race 1 Clm $6,250 (12:35 ET)
#1 Prague 4-1
#8 Shere Khan 9-2
#9 Right On Ready 7-2
#6 All About Diva 10-1
Analysis: Prague dueled for the early lead and faded to finish seventh last out against $8,000 starter allowance foes and drops back in for a tag. Moya claimed this guy for this price three back and protected him the first two starts for the barn. He has a couple of wins over the main track here and looks like a good fit at this level. He owns solid early and mid pace numbers and figures to be sent from the rail.
Shere Khan finished evenly last out in a fourth place finish in the same race our top pick exits. Two back this guy was beaten just a neck in a tough beat at this tag. He won at this level four back over the main track here where he has won 3 of 8 and has run very well on wet tracks in his career, winning 4 of 6 on off going which we might see today.
Wagering
WIN: #1 to win at 3-1 or better.
EX: 1,8 / 1,6,8,9
TRI: 1,8 / 1,6,8,9 / 1,3,6,8,9
Today’s Featured Race of the Day from Gulfstream Park:
GP Race 9 Clm $16,000 (4:32 ET)
#9 Frye's Leap 10-1
#1 Calidez 4-1
#10 Savanna's Smile 10-1
#3 Grandma Maria 8-1
Analysis: Frye's Leap tries dirt for the first time here in her third career outing. She broke her maiden on turf here for a $35,000 tag in her debut and then faded to finish eighth against $35,000 optional claimers in her first start against winners. She drops into a softer spot here and she might get an off track she is bred to run over. Decent value if she goes off near her 10-1 morning line.
Calidez broke inward at the break, stalked the early pace while saving ground and finished evenly in a fourth place finish last out in her second career start. Both trips came on poly and she tries conventional dirt for the first time here. Her one local work was on the slow side but she is dropping in class here. She is out of a stakes placed During mare and Castellano takes the call.
