At the Gate - Sunday
By Mike Dempsey
It was a rough opening day at Gulfstream Park on Saturday, with just three winners on top on the 11-race Claiming Crown card.
I had eight of the winners listed including a pair of winners sent out by Jorge Navarro, who also had a close up second.
He won the Rapid Transit with Shaft of Light ($4.80) and the Express with Defer Heaven ($6.80) and missed in the Iron Horse with Goodtimehadbyall who came up a half-length short.
Navarro is hitting at a 30% clip on the year, and if you recall he was suspended for 60 days for six post-race positives for the regulated medication flunixin that were detected following races at Tampa Bay’s 2011-12 meeting.
Tampa Bay elected to not allow him to enter horses at all for the 2013-2104 meeting.
Some of his horses seem to run right out of their skin on occasion, making him one heck of a trainer I guess.
On Derby Day, this year he won two races, with Sharp Azteca in the Pat Day Mile (G2) and Catalina Red in the Churchill Downs Stakes (G2). They both looked as if they had been shot out of a cannon.
Between the time of his six positives and his suspension, nearly 20 months had passed. During that time, he won the Monmouth Park training title, winning at a 32% clip.
Justice comes slow in horse racing, and each time I see Navarro win a race I get sick to my stomach. He is one of a handful of trainers that have had multiple drug positives that just keeps on training and winning.
I just hope all his horses that ran on Saturday at Gulfstream Park test clean. If not, he may be slapped on the wrist with another 60-day suspension to be served in 2025.
My Best Plays Report for Sunday includes my eight strongest plays from Aqueduct and Gulfstream Park.
Here is the opening race from Gulfstream Park to get the day off to a good start:
GP Race 1 Clm $16,000N2L (12:35 ET)
#8 Yes Mongolia 8-1
#5 Break Away 7-2
#6 Fist Bump 5-1
#4 Earhart 12-1
Analysis: Yes Mongolia stalked the pace while saving ground and weakened to finish fifth last out at Hawthorne against $25,000 non-winners of two on the switch from turf to dirt. The winner Vilaro came back to beat allowance foes in her next outing on Nov. 25. Her maiden score came on turf. She gets a jock upgrade here from the 10 pound bug to Jaramillo and the 8-1 morning line looks more than fair.
Break Away stalked the early pace and came with a good late rally to finish in the runner up spot last out at this level, beaten a length for the top spot. This gal has racked up a bunch of losses but her last two starts have been solid. Two back at Arlington Park over good ground she was beaten just a neck. She makes her second start off a two month break.

WIN: #8 to win at 9-2 or better.

Today’s Featured Race of the Day from Aqueduct:
AQU Race 8 Alw $67,000N1X (3:43 ET)
#9 Apologynotaccepted 6-1
#1 Chorus Line 5-2
#7 Felini 2-1
#3 Play Unified 6-1
Analysis: Apologynotaccepted pressed the early pace and weakened to finish fourth last out in her first trip over the Big A main track and was coming back off nearly a four month layoff. The mare caught a racing strip that was playing to outside stalkers and closers that day. She should be tighter second off the bench for Mott and she showed some serious promise in her first two career starts, breaking her maiden in her debut by 16 lengths at Gulfstream Park back in March.
Chorus Line was a sharp winner last out against $50,000 starter allowance foes in his first start off the claim by De Lauro and her first start against winners. She broke her maiden for $20,000 when in the Mott barn. She makes her third start of her current form cycle and a repeat of her last outing makes her a player in this tougher spot.

WIN: #9 to win at 9-2 or better.

Today’s Featured Race of the Day from Gulfstream Park:
GP Race 8 Clm $30,000N2L (4:02 ET)
#6 Bingo Kitten 2-1
#5 Lottery Ticket 5-1
#2 Cavity 6-1
#4 Whip N Nay Nay 8-1
Analysis: Bingo Kitten makes his first start since running eighth last out at the Spa against a real tough group of Alw-2 optional claimers. The runner up Deeply Undervalued came back to win the Commonwealth Derby (G2) in his next outing at Laurel Park on Sept. 24. He drops in for a tag here for the Maker barn that is 18% winners with runners coming back off a 61-180 day layoff.
Lottery Ticket stalked the early pace while saving ground and tired to finish eighth last out against Alw-1 foes. The runner up Metaphorically returned to beat $12,500 starter allowance foes in his next outing on Nov. 6. The colt broke his maiden on the main track here in August and is 0 for 9 on turf in his career but he does have three seconds over the weeds and this is not a real tough looking group he faces here.

These are price plays for exotic players looking to find a couple of extra contenders to use in their trifecta and superfecta wagers. Or for those with smaller bankrolls, you might want to get in a small win-place wager.
