At the Gate - Friday
By Mike Dempsey

We have a big day coming up at Belmont Park on Saturday with Empire Showcase Day, an 11-race card devoted to New York breds with eight stakes worth $1.75 million in purses.

The two marquee events both have the defending champion back in action.

The $300,000 Empire Classic Handicap, a nine-furlong test on the main track drew a field of nine runners including defending champ Empire Dreams for trainer Tom Albertrani.

The gelding has made just three starts since last year’s win, most recently running second in a state bred stake at Finger Lakes. He is 10-1 on the morning line.

The 2-1 morning line favorite is Governor Malibu, who returned to the state bred ranks last out and trounced second level optional claimers. He was fourth in the Belmont Stakes (G1) and second in the Jim Dandy (G2) earlier this year.

Wonder Gal (5-2) looks for a repeat in the $250,000 Empire Distaff Handicap for trainer Leah Gyarmati. She wo the race last year at 9-2 and has won just once in five starts since, beating state bred Alw-2 foes at the Spa.

Here is the opening race from Belmont Park to get the day off to a good start:

BEL Race 1 Clm $25,000N2L (12:55 ET)
#9 Heated Verdict 7-2
#10 Tracking Stock 3-1
#2 Crowd Funding 5-2
#1 Timber 6-1

Analysis: Heated Verdict tracked the early pace while in between foes and weakened to finish fourth last out against state bred Alw-1 foes going six furlongs on the turf. The runner up Fearthefalcon came back to beat state bred Alw-1 foes in his next outing on Oct. 13. The blinkers go on as he makes his third start off the bench here for the Weaver barn.

Tracking Stock faces winners for the first time after overcoming some trouble in the stretch to graduate against $40,000 foes last out at seven furlongs on the turf here. It took eight tries to get the job done and he was the beaten chalk four times. A clean trip and he looks capable of moving forward off his maiden score.

Wagering
WIN: #9 to win at 5-2 or better.
EX: 9,10 / 1,2,9,10
TRI: 9,10 / 1,2,9,10 / 1,2,3,9,10

Today’s Featured Race of the Day from Belmont Park:

BEL Race 7 Alw $62,000N1X (4:13 ET)
#2 Picco Uno 5-2
#1 Even Brite 6-1
#9 Saluda 3-1
#5 Golden Gem 5-1

Analysis: Picco Uno faded to finish a well beaten 10th last out at this level at the Spa going seven furlongs after a good effort two back. IN her first go against winners two back she tracked the early pace and finished up well for the runner up spot behind repeat winner Super Surprise, who returned to win the state bred Fleet Indian in her next outing on Aug. 26. This gal broke her maiden over the main track here and her last was too bad to believe. She is in a sharp barn with Servis and figures to bounce back with a better effort in this spot.

Even Brite stalked the early pace and was caught out wide, finishing evenly in a fifth place finish at this level. The mare has come up short seven times at this level since breaking her maiden in her debut back in '14 but catches a pretty weak group here and may end up a decent price.

Wagering
WIN: #2 to win at 2-1 or better.
EX: 1,2 / 1,2,5,9
TRI: 1,2 / 1,2,5,9 / 1,2,4,5,9

Live Longshots:
These are price plays for exotic players looking to find a couple of extra contenders to use in their trifecta and superfecta wagers. Or for those with smaller bankrolls, you might want to get in a small win-place wager.

Belmont Park
R2: #3 Globeleza 12-1
R2: #4 Wicked Fun 8-1
R3: #5 Foreset 8-1
R5: #4 Pure Lemon 8-1
R9: #5 Pure Gemmz 15-1

Good luck today!

Race 1 - $30,000 Guaranteed Pick Five Pool

Race 3 - $25,000 Guaranteed Pick Four Pool

Race 7 - $50,000 Guaranteed Pick Four Pool

MEET STATS: 0 - 0 / $0.00

BEST BETS: 0 - 0 / $0.00

Best Bet: ARIANA G (2nd)

Spot Play: IM SOME GRADUATE (9th)

Race 1

(7) CLEAR VISION has been coming into form lately and actually holds a respectable 9 in-the-money finishes in 11 starts this year. In a field without a standout, he can get the job done. (8) EL BLOOMBITO has been reasonably sharp out of town and gets Tetrick’s call over three others. (6) ALEXIE MATTOSIE picked up his last win when David Miller was in the bike. Don’t be shocked if he is much better this week after his seventh-place finish when he was used hard early.

Race 2

(1) ARIANA G got right back in the win column with a huge mile in Lexington and should take care of business so she can get a good post in next week’s final. (7) PRINCESS AURORA has picked up her game since adding hobbles and it is hard to say how good she is at this point. We should learn something on Friday. (6) CHEZATTER seems like the most likely runner-up behind the top choice, but the exacta price will be very low.

Race 3

(2) THE WALL has been facing Huntsville and Downbytheseaside, the best rookie pacing colts in the game right now, week after week. If this guy is going to step up, this seems like the right spot. (5) CHIP WALTHER burst on the scene with a 1:50 3/5 win at the Red Mile last time. Has he turned a corner? (1A) MIKE’S Z TAM has been racing well and should be tighter in his second start after a short three week break.

Race 4

(3) ICE ATTRACTION has won her last three races and was able to hold on most recently despite missing six weeks of action. I’ll give her the narrow call. (1) TREVISO went two-for-two at the Red Mile and seemingly has a big shot at winning a Crown. (5) HILLARMBRO hasn’t put in many bad races; in with a shot.

Race 5

This field is wide open and with Ariana G as a key in an earlier leg, at least that should allow you to spread here in the pick five. (8) CARD SHOCK has been stuck in outside posts at Yonkers over the last month and the switch to the big track should suit him nicely. (7) URBANITE HANOVER was facing tougher in his last Big M appearance and gets a big driver change to Gingras. (5) OUR JERRY LEE N picks up David Miller and shows some lines that should make him competitive in here.

Race 6

(10) ALWAYS B MIKI became the fastest standardbred in history a couple of weeks back. None of these horses can stay with him if he brings even a B-level effort. (5) DEALT A WINNER doesn’t have a great record but is usually reasonably close against the best pacers in North America. (1) BETTOR’S EDGE & (2) ART HISTORY are sharp now, which makes them dangerous to some extent.

Race 7

(7) FROST DAMAGE BLUES could be a smooth trip away from winning the Breeders Crown final next week. She is as good as any in this field. (2) SOLAR SISTER has the opportunity to take charge in this spot. (3) IMAGINE DRAGON came up with a big mile in Kentucky. Can she continue her good run versus much better foes? (6) YAGONNAKISSMEORNOT has made a very quiet $329,938 this year; classy mare.

Race 8

(1) DAYSON only needs to stay trotting to take care of business against this group. (2) B YOYO knows his way to the winner’s circle here. If the top one blows up, he should be tough. (4) ALDEBARAN EAGLE was able to get his speed to carry to mile in Lexington; has a chance.

Race 9

(6) I’M SOME GRADUATE has some ability but can’t seem to stay on the track. For the first time in a long time he makes starts in consecutive weeks and I’m taking that as a sign he is ready to roll. (2) SPICEBOMB has done well here and comes off a solid qualifier. (4) SAPIENT HANOVER has been stuck with outside posts of late and might be able to step up his game in a spot like this one.

Race 10

(1A) LABATT HANOVER doesn’t jump off the page, but who does in this lackluster group? I think this gelding will appreciate the switch to the bigger track. (3) TWILL BE DONE gets a nice driver change to Campbell. (7) ROCK THE BONES was David Miller’s choice over my top pick; let’s see who is right.

Race 11

(1) VENUS DELIGHT has become more of a trip horse this year and something tells me she might be able to sit pretty behind speedster (4) LADY SHADOW and have a chance to pick her off late. The latter has been the best mare in the country all year but faltered most recently. (2) BEDROOMCONFESSIONS should stick close and get into the final.

Race 12

(1) PLANET ROCK & (1A) ROBIN J combine to form a strong entry from trainer Linda Toscano. I’m not sure they are a lock, but it’s a nice two for one play. (4) NO CHASER comes off a big mile at the Red Mile but did sit a perfect trip. (5) WORLD APART comes in with form but needs to go a bit faster.

Race 13

(4) MERCEDES LORENE comes off an improved effort after a two month break. Perhaps the time off helped. (10) ROYAL KNOCKOUT gets class relief and a Hall of Fame driver in the bike. (3) BULLVILLE MAGGIE finds a great spot this week and could be firing fast off the gate. (1) MISS DEFIANCE made a move last time before tiring, which is more than she has shown in some time; moving in the right direction?

DRF

MEET STATS: 264 - 1099 / $1,727.30

BEST BETS: 31 - 103 / $148.40

Best Bet: MASTERSON (5th)

Spot Play: AL RAZA N (9th)

Race 1

(5) SOUTHWIND TERROR moves down the ladder and figures to get a favorable trip against these; ready for action. (4) IM THE REAL MAJOR finally leaves the far outside post and could make some noise. (2) BOOGIEWOOGIEBRIAN did show good speed in his qualifier at Monticello last out; not out of this.

Race 2

(4) ALL ARTIST Gelding's last try might be an indication he will move forward and good to see Brennan keeping the faith staying aboard this sophomore; gets the call. (3) PAN STREET USA was sent down the road last out for all the glory; likely favorite. (6) POWDER KEG has hit the board in his last five tries; must be considered in all the exotic slots.

Race 3

(2) ULTIMATE G was in the pocket most of the way and was moving through the passing lane but could not get to the winner Pan Street USA last week. Gelding seems ready to put his best foot forward. (5) WILD AGAIN got the job done wire to window last out; threat again. (1) PRINCE ASTON should do much better from the fence.

Race 4

(1) GOTTA LAUGH AGAIN draws the best and Bartlett returns on this pacing gelding; ready to boss these. (8) P L HELLCAT was nailed for win honors by A Plus Hanover last time out; will have to overcome the 8-hole tonight; quite possible. (2) GALLANT SEELSTER could hang around for a share of the purse.

Race 5

(5) MASTERSON has been very game in his last three outings and this gelding has every right to pick them up and lay them down for all the glory. (4) DOJEA SOLO Sharp and consistent and has fine speed; main danger. (6) SPORTSKEEPER is better than his last try so watch out.

Race 6

(4) BETTER SAID has been facing Open foes upstate and this might be a perfect spot for this pacing mare to greet the cameraman for pictures. (1) BABY REMIND ME was late on the scene to nail down the victory last time out. (5) ELM GROVE INARUSH just missed the score by only a nose in her Plainridge finale.

Race 7

(2) CAROLSIDEAL might be ready to get back to the winner's circle if she gets the favorable trip; possible. (4) BETTOR N BETTER was sharp in victory in her latest and will be dangerous again. (5) MOTU MOONBEAM N has hit the board 12 of 19 starts this year and this pacing mare can make some noise.

Race 8

(7) KRISPY APPLE hopefully will return to her winning form and show speed against these; another shot for glory. (4) LISPATTY has good speed and the last time she was here was on September 2nd she was a game second; big threat. (1) SOUTHWIND ROULETTE closed strong to grab the victory in her last try.

Race 9

(2) AL RAZA N moves back to the NW25000 ranks where she got the job done four trips ago; the pick. (1) CHEYENNE ROBIN has put in two seconds in a row and now she moves to the fence; main danger. (4) TIPITINA raced evenly and held on for show money last out.

Race 10

(6) SWEETNSINFUL did not have enough gas in the tank but held on for the show spot in her last try. Mare has been consistent at this level and figures to get back to the winner's circle with a well judged drive from Mr. Bartlett. (2) DEUCES FOR CHARITY just got up for win honors last week. (5) SIR JILLIAN Z TAM just missed glory by a neck against lesser company recently.

Race 11

(5) GEORGINA CORNER Mare moves back to a flat mile and she should have enough early speed in here for her to pick them up and lay them down; choice. (1) ZORGWIJK NOVA moves back to her winning level and she appears to be the logical threat. (3) LUCK O THE IRISH needs to revert to his October 4th try to contend with these; capable.

Race 12

(4) MY MIND IS MADEUP has put in three sharp efforts and sophomore is versatile; the pick. (2) IDEAL MAGIC gets post relief and that should help his cause; maybe. (5) DEMOCRACY N was uncovered at the 3/4 pole and just got up to score by a head last time around; don't overlook.

Race 4 - $50,000 Guaranteed Pick Four Pool

PICK 5: 2,5,6,7/5/2,3,5,8/3,4,5,7/3,5,6 = $38.40

EARLY PICK 4: 3,4,5,7/3,5,6/2,3,4/3 = $36

LATE PICK 4: 3/2,6/2,3,6/1.2.5.8.9 = $30

MEET STATS: 434 - 1280 / $2265.80 BEST BETS: 69 - 117 / $215.70

SPOT PLAYS: 28 - 117 / $179.10

Best Bet: LEAVING A LEGACY (2nd)

Spot Play: YOUR MY SECRET (10th)

Race 1

(2) BELLA PALAZZO switches to the Weller barn here which is enough to get my attention in a wide-open dash. (7) SECOND SISTER drops and adds Lasix. She may be hard to chase down on the lead here. (5) JETPEDIA did well for Zeron last week and he sticks here; using. (6) ADVERSITY is capable at this level if he stays flat.

Race 2

(5) LEAVING A LEGACY is tough to beat in this class right now, so I'll stick with her. (4) CHOOSE MY JET has been a win machine racing in Ottawa. Her consistency should be respected. (7) TOTAL KNOCKOUT continues to grab good shares every week and is a good one to use underneath. (1) GOLDIES BAD GIRL raced mush better last week. She can sneak onto the ticket here, too.

Race 3

(3) BATOUTAHILL took too long to make front last time which softened him up late. The better post should help here. (2) STONEBRIDGE PEACE was 2nd first time Jamieson drove and he sticks here. Further improvement could be coming tonight. (5) SMASH HIT comes off a nice win and she has to be included in the Pick 5. (8) JLS BAD MOON RISIN was motoring late last time. He is another that could take this competitive dash with the right trip.

Race 4

(7) BRING ME DIAMONDS takes a substantial class drop here and you have to think she will be put into play early vs. these; top call. (3) BIG TSUNAMI was narrowly beaten by a red-hot filly last time and she continues to improve; consider. (4) LYONS RIVER PRIDE faces easier and she should be prominent for a long way here. (5) KATIES BEACH gets some major post relief here and she could get rolled early, which is when she typically does her best work.

Race 5

(6) MAPLELEA should be able to lay a bit closer early from post 6 which could make the difference here. (5) LIGHTS GO OUT should be a strong pace presence here again. (3) AINSLEYNOELLE races best when positioned near the front. I expect her to be sent for good position early here. (1) MISS COCO LUCK should parlay a good trip into a share here.

Race 6

(4) CABERTOSS may not look very good on paper, but, he has surprised at huge prices before here off similar profiles. I'll swing for the fences here. (3) HARPER BLUE CHIP drops in class still in search of his first win in more than two years but he seems to fit well here; using. (2) LITTLE RD CHEV dominated at the lowest conditioned class now moves back up but she figures here, too. (6) OLYMPIC SON faltered as a big chalk last time. He will be a pace factor again, but, a minor award seems likely.

Race 7

(3) TEARFUL OF HAPPY made two moves last week and almost got there late. She should be tough in here. (4) JIMBELINA had good speed both early and late on her mile and just missed. She's in top form and is a major player here. (6) LUCKY PLAYER may have went a bit too fast in the third 1/4 last time. She can be a threat off am easier trip. (5) HOT SPOT HANOVER had little to offer as the chalk last time; minor share predicted here.

Race 8

(6) HONOR ABOVE ALL was too far back early last time. Expect him to start his move earlier here. (2) POINTE OF INQUIRY gets post relief and she is capable in this class if she can stay flat. (5) MASS BALANCE is a good one to use underneath in exotic wagers as he almost always takes a slice. (1) IRISH SCOTCH can take a share if he stays flat this time.

Race 9

(3) TONIGHTIMLOVINGYOU is in great form now gets an even better post tonight; call to repeat. (2) DOCS SAUSALITO - second to the choice last week - is capable of bridging the gap if she can work out a trip closer to her rival early. (6) BLUEBERRY WILL is sharp and dangerous and is another to consider for late Pick 4 bets. (1) JUMP JIVE AND JAM seems destined to take a smaller share this time as the top three are much tougher than those that she beat last time.

Race 10

(5) YOUR MY SECRET gets Trevor Henry back here and he did well with her in September; angle play. (9) BAROCKEY is racing as well as ever right now and she should be a big threat. (8) SOUTHWIND GEISHA has raced tough in her past two. She can win this if she can find a live helmet to follow. (1) REQUEST FOR PAROLE should get a better trip here starting from the inside; consider. (2) ST LADS PENNY LANE can take a smaller share by passing many of these late.
