At the Gate - Friday
By Mike Dempsey
We have a big day coming up at Belmont Park on Saturday with Empire Showcase Day, an 11-race card devoted to New York breds with eight stakes worth $1.75 million in purses.
The two marquee events both have the defending champion back in action.
The $300,000 Empire Classic Handicap, a nine-furlong test on the main track drew a field of nine runners including defending champ Empire Dreams for trainer Tom Albertrani.
The gelding has made just three starts since last year’s win, most recently running second in a state bred stake at Finger Lakes. He is 10-1 on the morning line.
The 2-1 morning line favorite is Governor Malibu, who returned to the state bred ranks last out and trounced second level optional claimers. He was fourth in the Belmont Stakes (G1) and second in the Jim Dandy (G2) earlier this year.
Wonder Gal (5-2) looks for a repeat in the $250,000 Empire Distaff Handicap for trainer Leah Gyarmati. She wo the race last year at 9-2 and has won just once in five starts since, beating state bred Alw-2 foes at the Spa.
Here is the opening race from Belmont Park to get the day off to a good start:
BEL Race 1 Clm $25,000N2L (12:55 ET)
#9 Heated Verdict 7-2
#10 Tracking Stock 3-1
#2 Crowd Funding 5-2
#1 Timber 6-1
Analysis: Heated Verdict tracked the early pace while in between foes and weakened to finish fourth last out against state bred Alw-1 foes going six furlongs on the turf. The runner up Fearthefalcon came back to beat state bred Alw-1 foes in his next outing on Oct. 13. The blinkers go on as he makes his third start off the bench here for the Weaver barn.
Tracking Stock faces winners for the first time after overcoming some trouble in the stretch to graduate against $40,000 foes last out at seven furlongs on the turf here. It took eight tries to get the job done and he was the beaten chalk four times. A clean trip and he looks capable of moving forward off his maiden score.
Wagering
WIN: #9 to win at 5-2 or better.
EX: 9,10 / 1,2,9,10
TRI: 9,10 / 1,2,9,10 / 1,2,3,9,10
Today’s Featured Race of the Day from Belmont Park:
BEL Race 7 Alw $62,000N1X (4:13 ET)
#2 Picco Uno 5-2
#1 Even Brite 6-1
#9 Saluda 3-1
#5 Golden Gem 5-1
Analysis: Picco Uno faded to finish a well beaten 10th last out at this level at the Spa going seven furlongs after a good effort two back. IN her first go against winners two back she tracked the early pace and finished up well for the runner up spot behind repeat winner Super Surprise, who returned to win the state bred Fleet Indian in her next outing on Aug. 26. This gal broke her maiden over the main track here and her last was too bad to believe. She is in a sharp barn with Servis and figures to bounce back with a better effort in this spot.
Even Brite stalked the early pace and was caught out wide, finishing evenly in a fifth place finish at this level. The mare has come up short seven times at this level since breaking her maiden in her debut back in '14 but catches a pretty weak group here and may end up a decent price.
Wagering
