2 Units
Evansville -4 -110
Will drop a couple units for now, and then hit again if I can get it below 4. Needless to say I really like the Aces. Missouri Valley much better conference than the Ohio Valley. It showed last year as the Aces finished in last in the Valley, but beat the Govenors who won the Ohio Valley. Evansville has won 4 of the last 6 meetings. I bring this up cause it shows that Evansville has better players top to bottom throughout the rosters.
I am pretty high on this Evansville team this season. They have all 5 starters back, and their top 2 reserves. I am expecting them to be a surprise and finish in the top half of the Valley standings. The Aces are very strong at home. They are very good at protecting their home court. The main reason is b/c they shoot the ball well. It always helps shooting on your home rims. Anyone who played basketball at a high level can attest to this, especially shooters. There is nothing like shooting on rims that you are comfortable/familiar with. Add the strong crowd support equals a recipe for a strong homecourt advantage. For iexample they drew 9,000 for their exhibition game against D2 power Southern Indiana. (which they won)
As I was saying this team is poised to make a move. They have a strong, experienced backcourt with Shy Ely, and Jason Holsinger. They are a veteran duo who can shoot the ball, and set up the offense. Ely is an all conference player, and Holsinger really came into his own last season. Nate Garner looks as if he is stepping up to give the Aces a strong 3rd option. He had 11 and 20 respectively in the 2 exhibition games, and has the experience to enable him to do so. Evansville has the unique ability to adapt to their opponents and counter their strengths. They have the capibility to go to a 4 guard lineup, or can go big by adding 7 foot red shirt frosh Zach House, and Pieter Van Tongeren.
I give the Aces a huge advantage in the backcourt tomorrow. Other than Drake Reed they are a relatively inexperienced group. They lost their leading rebounder, leading 3 point shooter, and most importantly 4 year starter at point guard. Reed will get his, but I think Evansville has the ability to go big at times and throw countless bodies at him.
Austin Peay will get better as the season goes on, but Evansville is a tough place to play, especially against a talented experienced backcourt as theirs. I think Evansville will set the tone for their season with a big opening victory tomorrow.
Will be watching this line closely and hit if it were to drop below 4
