I play holdem regularly and have been quite successful in the past. As of late, it seems as though the cards just arent coming to me. I am still winning enough pots to stay even, but with the competition I am playing I should be winning every night. they all play very loose and call almost anything. Ive tried playing tight and loose but Im just not getting the cards to stay in enough pots. Are there streaks in card playing that can explain this or is it just my play that has changed?

Hard to say without watching the style. As long as staying even, i would continue the same style until the cards turn.

Good luck

Chuck-

If you are truly a winning player just wait out the the bad streak. Do not lossen up. If anything play tighter.

Last year I almost gave up poker after going on something like a 15-20 session losing streak (online and B&M, not coutning home games). It was UNREAL. During that time I was thinking: A) maybe I'm really not that good of a player, B) the wins that I logged previously were all luck, c) I'm beaing cheated. Basically, I tightened up and finally won. I susbequently went on a moster winning streak that more than made up for the losses. Intuitively, I guessed that I regressed to the mean.

In the end, poker is GAMBLING no matter what people say. If you are a good player you can win in the long run but remember the long run is a lifetime and in the short run anything can happen including losing your entire bankroll.

Just as I was about to thank you guys for the reassurance yesterday I had to get off (boss). Last night I won two tourneys! I cleaned everyone out so soon we had time to play another which took a little longer with the same result. Stuck to my guns and it finally paid off. Maybe I'll hit a little run like you swami...

Glad to hear things improved. Streaks happen and if you're a winning player good advice is to play tighter than usual, since your table image will be perceived as a loser and people will stay in longer and try to take hits on you.

Hey Charlie,
PATIENCE, PATIENCE, PATIENCE... Unfortunately, I CAN NOT follow my own advice. I guess that's why I fix PC's and mainframes for a living now and don't play poker for a living anymore, LOL!!!
If these games you play in are as LOOSE as you say they are, and you are as TIGHT a player as you say you are, the odds FAR outweigh in your favor. Your nut/lock hands will ALWAYS be paid off, (as you can't bluff out a bad player) and the whole idea is to be a 60% or better overall in the win column anyway in order to make a nice little steady or 2nd income. Luck DOES play a factor in poker, but unlike other "card casino" games, poker is SOLEY a game of skill where the "dealer" only hosts the game being played, and does NOT receive a hand so there is ZERO PERCENT house edge. (The house makes their money by raking a percentage of the pot.)
I personally prefer to play in a casino card room, i.e. Foxwoods, The Mirage, The Grand, etc. only because I love the atmosphere and drama that goes on in live card rooms.
Hope this helps, and good luck!!!
