Harrisburg Mayor Fasting In Hopes Of Solving City's Financial Crisis

NEW YORK (Edith Honan) - Pennsylvania's debt-ridden capital of Harrisburg has tried every form of fiscal belt-tightening, from layoffs to furloughs to filing for bankruptcy. Now, it is turning to God.

Mayor Linda Thompson said on Friday she will join religious leaders in three days of fasting and prayer to encourage "a cooperative spirit among government leaders, the business community and citizens."

"I am open about my faith and will be participating in the voluntary prayer and fast," Thompson said in a statement. The city is now weighing a financial rescue plan presented by the state.

The fast and prayers, which will be facilitated by about a dozen Christian, Jewish, and Muslim religious leaders, will begin at midnight on June 21 and end on June 24.

On Monday, a team of state-appointed advisors recommended the city sell a deeply indebted incinerator at the root of its fiscal problems, renegotiate its labor agreements, cut jobs, sell other assets and assume $26 million in new borrowing.

The city council has until July 23 to adopt the plan.

she could stand to lose a few anyway

only good thing that ever came out of Hburg was Shady McCoy although I do have fingers crossed that either the Tide or Pitt can get Noah Spence to sign on the line which is dotted. That kid is the real deal

hburg actually a hell of a drinking town...was there just 3 weeks ago. politicians know how to party...pretty shocking news, eh?

I'm guessing there are better ways to solve a budget crisis than fasting and praying but the alternative (look at obama administration) can be pretty awful, so more power to her!

Great regional beer up there called Yuengling. It's the oldest continuous brewery in the US. I've had it several times on business trips to the H'burg, Philly, King of Prussia area.

Does she really think GOD cares about their budget. There are far more important things in this world that he's busy looking over and the H'burg budget is not one of them. And please separate Church and State. Nothing drives me crazy more that these politicians who use their "wanna-be" religion to curry favor. Idiots!!

They should not spend more than they take in & to pay their debt they will have to take in more than they spend for whatever amount of time til their debt is paid off so amen if that will help them do that..She might be considered by some to be a nut but it doesnt hurt so pray away..

hate lager so i can't stand yuengling although some Pit joins sell half pitchers for $2.95 which isn't bad for a budget night. you want good hburg brew head to Appalachian Brewery...great stuff. In Philly area you have Yards and Philadelphia Brewing company which can put out some excellent stuff. Troegs is also in Hburg but not the biggest fan of their stuff. Great place in Carlisle called Cafe Brugge or something like that, if you're into belgians

That's the problem. Gov't is spending more that they are taking in. I don't mind a tax increase to raise revenue, but geez cut your budgets so you can eventually balance them. Just because you have a25K limit on your credit card does not mean you have to spend all 25K.

Problem is theirs is a no limit card.
