Unless you are a 12 year old black boy in Cleveland.
The caller said they didn't know if it was real.
If they knew it was fake, why would they call 911 to report a boy playing with a toy gun?
Do you think a white 12 year old boy gets shot within 2 seconds of the police arriving?
It's a terrible story.
A couple of facts though, the Officers were never told that the gun was "fake", or (in another post) "probably fake". The gun did not have the characteristics of a toy gun (bright orange plug).
I don't think people in Cleveland should have been up in arms over that incident though. It was just a tragedy. As sad as it is (was), it was just a tragic series of events that led up to it.
If the miscommunication was between the dispatcher and the cop, that is on the police dispatcher. But, if the cop really thought that was a real gun, why park right next to the boy? That can't be proper police procedure.
This boy's death wasn't a tragic accident; it was the result of poor policing technique and generalizations made about the kind of kids who live in that neighborhood. A 12 year old boy playing with a toy gun in a wealthy suburban neighborhood doesn't get shot within 2 seconds of the police arriving.
Sooooo what is the proper policing technique in that case, not knowing it was a toy gun? The only generalizations was a person aiming a gun at people and acting gangsta.
So, your whole argument pretty much hinges upon "why did the cop park 20 feet from a person with a gun?"If the miscommunication was between the dispatcher and the cop, that is on the police dispatcher. But, if the cop really thought that was a real gun, why park right next to the boy? That can't be proper police procedure.
