Went to the ER about 4 months ago because my heartbeat was fast and noticed it kept skipping beats. Was diagnosed with high blood pressure and was given pills to lower my blood pressure that also lowered my heart rate. Have no access to insurance because I only have a part time job right now and the little 1 hr trip to the ER cost me 2 grand. Anyway the medication seemed to work fine until lately. I have been noticing when I drink now my heartrate increases and I can feel my heart skipping beats again. There is no pain but it is a really weird feeling. Dont drink all the time but like to have a few on the weekends. Anyone else ever experience this? I heard alot of people experince this type of thing. Hope its not serious. May have to Quit drinking!:ohno:

It sucks, but id lay off the booze for a couple months and then try again and see what happens. I'm no expert though, that's just what I'd do

My friend got diagnosed with high blood pressure a few months ago, dude is 25, doc told him to cut out the drinking for a month, get on a strict low sodium diet and start exercising daily. 1 month later blood pressure was good and lost like 15 pounds.

My blood pressure skyrockets when I drink so I have to be really careful with it. I know the feeling man, it sucks. I just quit drinking all together, for this and many other reasons. GL.

BuddyLou, Alcohol consumption will immediately raise your blood pressure and offset the efficiency of your BP medication causing your symptoms to return. I have had medication controlled HBP for years but it stays under control because I have been sober (not a sip of alcohol) for over 20 years - I know boring but consider the alternatives.

The BP can be controled by you. Cut out salt, or @ least cut WAY down, very important. You're too heavy for Ht/Wt ratio, lose weight. Almost worse than booze is smoking, good time to quit. Excercise, a lot to absorb I know, but the alternative is not pleasant. The heart rythem is another story and should be under a Dr's oversite. SALT & smoking very essential. What's your BP? BOL

so in summary

change a little bit in your diet, avoid fat, reduce fat, do a little exercise, a simple 20 min will do wonders....and you will avoid more ER trips....and expensive medication

(after you get your act together perhaps would be able to go back to enjoy moderate drinking? )

FWIW - thanks to diet, exercise and yes some medication (but at much lower doses than in the past) I just took my own blood pressure and heart rate (you should invest in a home BP cuff at places like CVS, Walmart, Walgreens or on-line to keep an eye on your own numbers). My BP was 123 over 73 with a resting heart rate of 54 which is not at all bad for a person in their mid 60s.

Blood pressure monitors: which type of machine is recommended to use at home?

Good luck, wilheim
