July 31, 2009

HONOLULU (AP) -Hawaii coach Greg McMackin was suspended for 30 days without pay and has volunteered to take an additional 7 percent pay cut from his $1.1 million salary for making a derogatory comment while describing Notre Dame's chant before last year's Hawaii Bowl.

``I just want to say I made a big mistake. I want to apologize to everyone and anyone that I offended with my remarks,'' he said. ``I'm committed to do whatever I can to use this as a life lesson to learn from my mistake. When we make mistakes, we have to learn from it and make better people of ourselves.''
Athletic director Jim Donovan said McMackin will remain with the team on a voluntary basis during the suspension. McMackin met with Donovan and Chancellor Virginia Hinshaw.
``We all recognize that Coach McMackin made a serious mistake that has hurt many people and brought negative attention to our state and university,'' Hinshaw said. ``He is clearly remorseful - as well as he should be.''
The second-year Warriors coach has repeatedly apologized for the comments made during a media briefing Thursday at the Western Athletic Conference football preview in Salt Lake City. He used a slur usually targeted at gays to describe Notre Dame's chant performed at a banquet before last year's Hawaii Bowl.
``I'm very disappointed in myself. I hope to make up for some for the pain I caused others,'' he said. ``I made a mistake. Now I have to show the leadership in dealing with the football program and building respect for all people in our community.''
Wiping away tears from his swollen-red eyes, McMackin said he's offended the gay and lesbian community and now he wants to work with them to use the incident as a ``teachable moment for me and hopefully others.''
``I should've never brought Notre Dame's program up in my interview,'' McMackin said. ``I'm sorry that I said something so hurtful and I'm very remorseful.''

I had to comment on this event on my site because I could say what I wanted to without getting in trouble.

so what did he actually say?

None of the articles will say except to write it like this: He used the "F" word that is derogatory toward homosexuals. From what I can surmise, he basically said that Notre Dame players and coaches and looked like a bunch of faggots in their pre-game ceremony before the Hawaii Bowl last season.

he would've been better off saying "a bunch of pussies".

Whether it be or fags or whatever derogatory word he said, the point is that McMackin set a low standard for himself as a head coach. Personally, I could care less what he said. But the NCAA and the universities see it different and aren't as forgiving. Like he said, he should have known better. By the sound of his press conference, I'm betting it will never happen again with this coach.

I understand that, and, no, he shouldn't have said it publicly in that forum, but I think the University is out of order making him give a portion of his salary to the fag group on campus. I remember whenever I was going to OU that a portion of our "student activity fees" went to the Gay and Lesbian group on campus. I went to the administration and told them it was against my religion to support homosexual activities and that if something else was not figured out, I was going to involve a lawyer and call the local news stations. They gave me 5 organizations that the student activity fee also went to and told me to go and divide the fee up between those 5. They even sent a school counselor out with me to make sure it was done, but I didn't have to support the fags.

If I were McMackin, I'd tell them to go jump in the ocean before I let them give my salary to support anything more than Lesbian porn.

$1.1 million*0.07 = $77,000

$11,000 per letter.

The vowels would have been cheaper on "Wheel of Fortune."

McMackin isn't being forced to donate a portion of his pay toward any organization. He's been suspended without pay and has chosen to voluntarily continue coaching the team during that time. The funds that would have been paid McMackin during that 30 days are being used to pay for a student intern program in a gay program, but no money is coming out of McMackin's pocket. Whether or not that program or any other received the extra cash now available, the dumb-ass Hawaii coach wouldn't be paid.
