My desktop's motherboard crashed on me, but the hard drive is still good. Problem is I took it out and put it in a Z-Disc. It works fine except the files that were in my documents are now not accessible. I had password protection for the login so I am guessing that is the wall I hae to climb. It is a Windows XP system and I use the same name and password on the laptop I use now since the desktop crashed. Anyone know how I can get to these files?

Bill, what's a Z-disc? I suspect that what you are saying is that you are no longer logging into the original operating system & therefore don't have the access to the files....is this correct?

Z-disc is essentially a case and a power supply to provide a backup drive. You plug in a hard drive and then use that as your backup. See I am technical enough to know how to do all that right, just can't get around $@#$@ Windows!

I would look into data recovery if it's very important to you...$80 at Best Buy, or there is data recovery software out there..

This probably won't work due to hardware differences, but is there any way to swap which drive it uses as it's primary(boot) drive?

I don't like the sounds of this, because unless you can boot to the original drive, you will have to break through the Microsoft security which is made to prevent exactly what you're trying to do.

This may be an $80 well spent unless you feel like spending some time trying to break through it yourself.

Don't do it yourself unless you believe you can. As for BestBuy etc...that 80 dollars. is the preliminary fee to look at the drive, not to recover data. that comes after.
