Rantissi was a hardliner and a firebrand orator
The head of the militant Islamic movement Hamas in the Gaza Strip, Abdul Aziz Rantissi, has been killed in an attack on his vehicle.
Mr Rantissi was driving his car in a Gaza suburb as an Israeli helicopter fired missiles at it, witnesses say.

At least two other people were also killed and several more wounded.

The attack came hours after a suicide bomber killed himself and an Israeli soldier at the Erez checkpoint just north of the city.

The BBC's Peter Greste, in Gaza City, says people are speculating that the attack was in response to the suicide bombing.

The militant Hamas leader was one of Israel's top targets after it assassinated Hamas founder Sheikh Ahmed Yassin in an airstrike last month.

'Israeli crime'

The Palestinian Authority condemned the killing of Abdel-Aziz al-Rantissi, accusing Israeli of "state terror".

"We condemn in the strongest possible terms this Israeli crime and state terror," he said.

"It is evident now to the world that the Palestinian people need international protection more than ever," Palestinian cabinet minister Saeb Erekat told Reuters.

Mr Rantissi was one of the most forceful spokesmen against compromise with Israel.

He described himself as one of seven founders of Hamas and was considered second in importance only to Sheikh Yassin

Khaled Meshaal - Hamas' politburo chief in exile - was declared the group's overall leader after Yassin was killed.

Just a thought...how would you feel if the Cubans invaded the southern half of Florida to kill some people they label "terrorists" and then they said well we aren't leaving because we need a security buffer zone. Then some Cubans in Havana say "enough of this shithole lets go to Miami and set up camps with hundreds of homes". Bush should have just told Sharon enough is enough, you guys get out of Gaza now, get out of the West Bank soon, and forget your settlers. Most of them are wealthy by Palestinian standards and could potentially be key pieces to a Palestinian economy if they choose to remain there after handover of territories. People all thought whites would be marginalized in South Africa after apartheid, but look at just how many people in the ANC are white now! While there is plenty of religious fervor in some of the people living there, most people just want to live a comfortable life and couldn't care less if their neighbor or coworker goes to a synagogue or a mosque after work. These are the unfortunate victims of this mess. Then again who knows how different the world stage would be if the whole situation was solved quickly. Bill, at times I must question your sanity. Arab nations started 4 wars against Israel; 1948, 1956, 1967 and 1973. Each time Israel won, and each time Israel gave back most of the land they won. Shouldn't 4 invasions in 50 years allow the attacked country a security buffer?

The comment regarding Arabs only wanting to work for Israel is laughable. Haven't you read the Arab newspapers discuss what they would like to do with the Jews? Do you know what they teach their children about the Jews? They typically call for DESTRUCTION of Israel, not CONSTRUCTION of Israel.

The problems in the Middle East have been caused primarily by the Arab nations. Imagine the consequences if Israel completely disarmed. How long would Israel last as a country? Now imagine the consequences if the Arab nations surrounding Israel disarmed. Would Israel invade, or would we have peace in the middle east?

I am glad that they killed that terrorist because who knows how many Jewish and Muslim lives would have been saved. Muslim lives in the sense of Hamas using mentally challenged people to commit suicide bombings like the most recent incident with a 16 year old Palestinian.

I don't think that the US supported Sharon with the recent strike. Remember that Ariel Sharon is having problems within his government regarding corruption allegations. Maybe this missile strike is a way to stall his accusations. Remember when President Bill Clinton ordered massive bombings in Bosnia right after the Monica Lewinsky accusations came about. Nevertheless, I believe what he did was justified because this Hamas leader is a terrorist.

Lander, Israel did not kick off a high tech terrorist attack against Palestians - what they did was a calculated strike against the leader who was consistently ordering attacks against them - what the Palestinians are doing is blowing up restaurants with innocent people in them - the Palestians are not going after strategic militray posts or people or Sharon - they are jsut trying to hurt women and children at lunch - they are just trying to bring pain and suffering - Israel does not send missles into crowds hoping to kill women and children - don't get me wrong - there is blame on both sides.
