Well you better go 1st thing in the morning if you havent. You see in just 5 days they have already used over 90million of the 1 Billion set aside for this program. Why did they have this program? Wasnt it to stimulate car sales and thus the ECONOMY? Didnt the MOTUS tell us that he wanted the money to go to "shovel ready" projects that could get the money into the economy in 90 days??????
Yet we find out that 2/3rds of the money isnt even planned to be spent until ....the next election year. ( wow thats a shock) Ok ok get off the political rant....NO this isnt a rant.

The reason u need to go 1st thing in the morning is because by noon if not earlier the Cash for Clunkers program WILL BE SUSPENDED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

WHAT?????????????? people are buying cars like crazy, the money is flowing EXACTLY where it was intended to go.....So Y would they suspend it????
O CNN and MSNBC and other morons will tell u this and that but the real reason is because ....ITS WORKING!!!! They had no intention of this thing actually working. People are spending money and they are not getting a big enough piece of the action.....They will suspend it until they can refigure where they went wrong....

And as always....im making all this up.....:toast:

Not all, but most.

To wit:

PPP: Well you better go 1st thing in the morning if you havent. You see in just 5 days they have already used over 90million of the 1 Billion set aside for this program.

Bar: According to coverage in this morning's Wall Street Journal, the program's budget has almost been exhausted within the first week. Over $90m has already been sent out, with the remaining $900m committed to dealers who have pending agreements with car buyers.

Bar: Though I'm happy to be corrected by a legitimate cite, I'm thinking you pretty much made this part up.

Bar: Not sure where the "noon if not earlier" comes from, but in the WSJ coverage:

Obama administration officials warned congressional leaders Thursday it planned to suspend the program at midnight. But the White House released a statement late Thursday saying that completed deals would be honored and the program is still under review.

But I do appreciate the Topic...seriously

In my otherwise busy schedule I had completely overlooked this very attractive stimulus program.

If the feds succeed in expanding the funding for a few more weeks, we could likely use it along with a trade of my 1992 Chevy S10 to score me a much nicer and later model truck

Does the S-10 get 18 or better MPG?

Yeah....I saw that caveat when I was reading up in St Pete Times today.

I'm probably 22-24mpg on freeway. 18-20 on surface streets with speeds of 25-50mph

I could probably make the case since it's just rolled over 200K miles about a month ago and the good, trusty engine is chugging a bit in need of new plugs and wires.

<!-- end .byline -->WASHINGTON – The House has voted to rush an additional $2 billion into the popular but financially strapped "cash for clunkers" car purchase program.
The bill was approved on a vote of 316-109. House members acted within hours of learning from Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood that the program was running out of money.
Called the Car Allowance Rebate System, or CARS, the program is designed to help the economy and the environment by spurring new car sales. Car owners can receive federal subsidies of up to $4,500 for trading in their old cars for new ones that achieve significantly higher gas mileage.
House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer said the new money for the program would come from funds approved earlier in the year as part of an economic stimulus bill.
THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.
WASHINGTON (AP) — The House rushed Friday to pump $2 billion into a popular cash-for-clunkers program running near empty, with a leading Democrat saying "consumers have spoken with their wallets."
A floor vote was under way at midday on the bill to refuel the car-purchase program. House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer had said earlier that the additional money would come from funds Congress approved earlier in the year as part of a $787 billion economic stimulus bill.
Hoyer, D-Md., said that at the request of House Republicans — whose approval was required for swift passage — the bill would include provisions for government auditors to make sure the money was being spent as intended.
Republicans argued that Democrats were trying to jam the legislation through.
House Minority Leader John Boehner said it was unclear how many Republicans would support on the plan.
"There are a lot of questions about how the administration administered this program. If they can't handle something as simple as this, how would we handle health care?" the Ohio Republican told The Associated Press.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said the cars purchased under the program were much more fuel-efficient than what the bill requires.
But some lawmakers complained that many dealers were left to contend with a chaotic government-run program.
"The federal government can't process a simple rebate. I've got dealers who have submitted the paperwork three times and have gotten three rejections," said Rep. Pete Hoekstra, R-Mich. "What is a dealer supposed to do?"
There had been a $1 billion budget for rebates for new car sales in the program that was officially launched last week and has been heavily publicized by automakers and dealers.
Called the Car Allowance Rebate System, or CARS, the program offers owners of old cars and trucks $3,500 or $4,500 toward a new, more fuel-efficient vehicle, in exchange for scrapping their old vehicle. Congress last month approved the plan to boost auto sales and remove some inefficient cars and trucks from the roads.
The Senate was not scheduled to vote on Friday but lawmakers hoped to win approval for additional funding next week.

Senate action is likely next week, making sure the program would not be affected by the sudden shortage of cash.
"Consumers have spoken with their wallets and they've said they like this program," said Rep. David Obey, D-Wis.
House members acted within hours of learning from Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood that the program — designed to help the economy as well as the environment — was out of funds. Under the program, car owners can receive federal subsidies of as much as $4,500 if they trade in their old car for a new one that achieves significantly higher gas mileage.
Sen. Carl Levin, D-Mich., said the administration assured lawmakers that "deals will be honored until otherwise noted by the White House." But he suggested that "people ought to get in and buy their cars."
At the White House, press secretary Robert Gibbs sought to assure consumers that the program is still running and will be alive "this weekend. If you were planning on going to buy a car this weekend, using this program, this program continues to run."
Gibbs would not commit to any timeframe beyond that.
It was unclear how many cars had been sold under the program.
Sen. Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich., said about 40,000 vehicle sales had been completed through the program but dealers estimated they were trying to complete transactions on another 200,000 vehicles, putting the amount of remaining funding in doubt.
John McEleney, chairman of the National Automobile Dealers Association, said many dealers have been confused about whether the program will be extended and for how long. Many had stopped offering the deals Thursday after word came out that the funds available for the refunds had been exhausted.
The clunkers program was set up to boost U.S. auto sales and help struggling automakers through the worst sales slump in more than a quarter-century. Sales for the first half of the year were down 35 percent from the same period in 2008, and analysts are predicting only a modest recovery during the second half of the year.
With so much uncertainty surrounding the program, North Palm Beach, Fla., dealer Earl Stewart said he planned to continue to sell cars under the program but would delay delivering the new vehicles and scrapping the trade-ins. "It's been a total panic with my customers and my sales staff. We are running in one direction and then we are running in another direction," he said.

They cant handle this little simple program...They cant handle making a website to track stimulus dollars ( The Liar said we could see every dollar as it was spent, all the where, whos and hows yet said site doesnt exsist almost a year after he said it)
And yet we still have moronic clowns calling for the socalists to take over Healthcare......Some people are just too stupid for the word...In fact Stupidity may be the biggest health problem (besides Michelles toxic garden that she gives kids vegetables out of) in this country....

I actually took advantage of this program, and got the family
a new Mazda5.

Though, I totally disagree with the program, it's asinine. The dealer
is forced to take the perfectly good mini-van that I traded in, that runs
fine - and totally trash it.

The mileage difference between the two vehicles is negligible maybe
2 MPG.

I'll take the government's $4500 free money, but it's a fucking stupid
program.

This is a better program than most of the gov't stimulus programs I've read about.

I don't agree with gov't getting involved much with the economy, but since they already bailed out wall street, banks, extended UE payments, every dipshit that was fooled into believing houseflipping was lifetime employment, and just about everyone else that isn't actually working for a living.

The gov't at least this time passed out some welfare to all consumers that are currently able and willing to buy a new car.

Considering all the money they've given to deadbeat homeowners, banks and wall street, maybe in 2010 to get union autoworkers back on the job, they ought to give everyone that either doesn't own a car or doesn't own one less than 3 years old, a leftover 2009 or new 2010.

Guess what, just because it's free to you, doesn't mean it's free to taxpayers.

Semantics suck when YOU'RE the welfare queen hey?

Of course it's not free to the tax-payers, that's why it's a
fucking stupid program.

Before you spewed the above post, did you experience at least a few seconds of chagrin for having typed the very misleading and at least partially fictional Post #1 to start this here thread?

Or do you just log in, put your keyboard into Drive, step on the gas and to hell with whatever might be standing in the road ahead?

ZIT, your new sled only gets 20 mpg?

Do they even make vehicles with that low of efficiency save for obvious muscle engined sports cars?

No, but the minivan I traded in got 3-4 MPG better than it was rated,
not sure why...

cool...

Wasn't meant as a dig...

I am sincerely out of touch with new passenger vehicle pluses and minuses.

As mentioned, I've been using a '92 Chevy S10 (with my '84 Walkman plugged into the cigarette lighter, doncha know) and the SheBar has had her 2003 Camry since early 2005.

We're both in line to upgrade during the next six months and I'm pretty sure I want us both to be scoring rigs that can get 25mpg at least and preferably closer to 30
