Why to watch: The Mountain West title is still up for grabs, but there's no margin for error for either team after major slipups last week. New Mexico was on a nice four-game winning streak before inexplicably losing to UNLV. Colorado State was starting to establish itself as the star of the conference with three straight strong wins, and then it lost to Wyoming 35-28. If you like running games, this will be for you with the Mountain West's number two (Colorado State) and three (New Mexico) attacks and number one (UNM) and two scoring offenses.
Why Colorado State might win: New Mexico can't stop anyone's passing attack allowing 268 yards per game. The Rams aren't just about running also averaging 266 yards per game through the air. The Lobos could have serious problems with the all-around balance of the Ram attack.
Why New Mexico might win: The Lobo run defense is the best in the league and fifth best in the country allowing a mere 75 yards per game. On the flip side, CSU's run defense is average at best and could have serious problems with New Mexico's power.
Who to watch: New Mexico might be a running team but that doesn't mean the passing attack is non-existent. Quarterback Casey Kelly bounced back from a 9 for 23 performance against Utah to go 20 of 38 for 408 yards and two touchdowns against UNLV. He also ran for a touchdown. He has problems throwing interceptions in bunched tossing three against the Rebels, three against Texas Tech and two against Utah State. He needs to have a big game to loosen up the Rams defense so the power ground attack can do its thing.
What will happen: New Mexico will have a solid game and be pumped up, but Colorado State has the singular superstar in quarterback Bradlee Van Pelt. This will be the type of game that he takes over and shows why he deserves his Player of the Year status.
