I can't believe the nerve of these hotels charging $10/day or more for wireless or even wired high-speed internet! I am on a long business trip so I don't care too much about the bill, but still one has to wonder what hotels are thinking charging $159 for a standard room in the suburbs and saying that isn't worthy of free internet! But anyways I had a problem connecting with the net tonight and called down to the front desk where they just said they would take the charge off my bill. After that I changed a few settings because I really needed to get online (to check the Rx of course!) and next thing you know the thing starts working. I know for a fact they won't charge me and those guys downstairs don't have a clue about it. So if you really get irked by this fee, just call them up and say it isn't working right and I am sure 99% of the time you will get it for free. Not like it costs them anything to have a customer using their bandwith late at night as it is.

WilBill,

Dishonesty is never a good policy, and I am surprised Genral concurs.
Most HIlton properties provide free high speed. Its easy enough to check before you book, or have your corporate travel service book. That's why I'm stqaying at the Hilton as opposed to Marriot this week, free internet, plu sthey get MTV.

I just thought it was cool that Bill has a priority with reading the Rx. My comment had nothing to do with paying or not paying for service.

icon_rolleyes.gif

perhaps you're Avatar name influences small impressionable minds who read the RX that being an 'assasin' is kool?

again I could care less about it & I am sure it is a far stretch if anything... HOWEVER... spare me the moral high-ground in relation to a man coming up with a little trick to get free internet at a Hotel...

I was in the Hotel Business for 10 years... if you are interested I will post about 5 ways Hotels 'STEAL' money from 'unsuspecting' travellers if you want.

Assassin is the title to a song from a band I used to like a long time ago.

As a frequent road traveler would always be interested in hearing the inside scoop on the hospitality biz.

Appreciate it.

As for small impressaionabe minds ... cmon, very little here that youngsters would find interesting.

Okay here is one for now...

lets say you walked into a BestBuy & found a DVD Player you wanted to buy. You see the ticket price & you notice it says 200$. You agree to that price & go to the cash not knowing that the DVD is actually on sale for 150$. When you get to the Cash you ask the Girl if the item is 200$? she says yes & charges you 200$. When you get home you notice in a Flyer the Item was on sale for 150$ but she charged you 200$

Of course Best Buy would never be allowed to get away with this.

HOTELS use this kind of practice all the time. They will have weekend specials advertised in the paper at 79.99 however if you walk in off the street & ask for their rate they will say '150$' if you are too stupid to ask if there are any sales or anything they will charge you the 150$ even though it is in black & white in the paper listed at 79.99$. Even if the hotel is only 20% full... they will try to squeeze you for whatever they can... Same holds true if you booked in advance at the Corporate Rate at 250$... when you get there they are charging people off the street 79.99$ becauz it is on sale & they are only 20% full... but you think they will let you know that your corp rate at 250$ could be reduced to only 79.99 & all you have to do is ask... NO WAY... they will cash the ticket for the full 250$.... They will trick 'unsuspecting' travellers as much as they can... All businesses do this...

I work for a large cell phone company now & you would be shocked how people are scammed without their knowledge...

assasin, most hotels have a 6PM Cancelation policy...

lets say you have a corp rate booked for a hotel... On the day you are checking in you can simply call the hotel & ask "Do you have any Specials". They are then obliged to tell you any advertised specials they may have so they might say something like "Yes Mr Customer we have 100$ a night special for this weekend". At that point all you have to do is Book it at that rate.... Hang up... & call back a few minutes later & Cancel your CORP rate reserved at 250$.

You can also do this if you show up to the hotel before the 6pm cancelation time... You simply ask "are there any specials?" if there are any you can have your rate changed to the special... If you wait till after 6pm however you can no longer do this as they will simply say that they are "Holding the Room for You" even if they are only 20% full... In fact you should never even tell them you have a reservation till you ask if there are any specials... If the special is better than your reserved rate... then you can simply tell them to modify it.

This is only one way large companies try to take advantage of un suspecting consumers....

I do understand the point however that "Two Wrongs do not Make a right"... Trust me however... You gotta do what you can to save a few bucks in this world.

HOTELS love it when CORPORATIONS are paying the bill... they pretty much have 'carte blanche' to charge what they want & the consumer doesnt give a chit cauz they are not paying...

Of Course the Corporation does negotiate a rate but it is often much higher than Day to Day specials the Hotel Has...

Settled out of court so too late to be a wistle blower on that one

err but nothing says they can't have an ownership stake in the travel agency booking the rooms

Sure enough, hotel bill had a charge for the amount and a credit a line below, so no charge

Assassin, in this particular case it wasn't dishonest. I did truly try to get it to work for a fee and their staff had no clue how to get it to work. They literally just install something and then hope you know how to use it because they surely don't. And your comment about checking first isn't always an option. So many hotels list that they have it, but few make it clear that it is pay or not, or if it is a place on one of the networks you have to subscribe to. There are a few chains that clearly state it is an included feature, but most do not. In any case, I still ask is it really adding any cost to the hotel's expenses if someone is using their bandwith or not? Obviously all the places that have set it up in their lobby for free don't worry if you are a guest or not. And even more to the point, if they really want an accurate billing, maybe they should fork out a little to have trained staff and a better billing system in the first place.
